Dongle Question

I have SampleTank XL / Sonic Synth 1 and am thinking about upgrading to Miraslov. One concern I have regarding Sampletank products is if I will be able to authorize on my "next" computer if IK goes out of business or stops supporting my "old" products in years to come.
I used to be against dongles, but now I'm wondering if dongles would in fact solve this dilemna. In other words, if I buy an IK product that uses a dongle, does that mean that I can use the dongle protected product on a new PC, without reliance on the existence of an online IK web site to "unlock" the software?

That's exactly right. Using a USB key means you can register the software online once, but use it on any computers you like (even if you've got several computers in the studio at once - if you don't mind unplugging and repluggin the USB key). That's because IK's products aren't authorised to a comptuer anymore - they're authorised to a key.

Kim,
I too...am very close to purchasing the Miroslav crossgrade - and I would like clarification on placing my Miroslav license on my Steinberg key (I run Nuendo 3.x). Does the key that ships with the crossgrade have the license pre-loaded or can I download/activate my license staright to my Steinberg key following the software install?
Cheers!

VP,
I'm not Kim, but I'll answer anyway
I transfered the license from the iKey over to the steinberg key before I activated the license, so it is preloaded to the iKey.
It was the same with CSR & AT2 aswell. I think the only downloadable license is for the free AT2 (for those who bought AT1 after Sep 2005)

Flynn,
How did the transfer work? I have read a bunch of horror stories on having Steinberg licenses working one minute and then after trying a transfer, they disappear...etc etc.
I have Nuendo and Wavelab on my Steinberg key and it is critical that this works with incident. Can you elaborate on the steps? Is it like place iKey in USB slot....run Syncrosoft transfer software...replace iKey with Steinberg key...?

It's a pretty straight forward process. Insert both keys, start syncrosoft LCC and you'll see both keys. Choose license transfer under wizard. It'll take you step by step.
(shows both keys, select the license to transfer, it'll select the other dongle per default. Then transfer the license.)
I've done it with Miroslav, CSR & AT2. No problems whatsoever.

I'll add that I have had zero trouble even with the d/l license....
Only thing is you have to rtfm...which is hard for me as a programmer

I've got Cubase SX3, Philharmonik, and CSR all on one USB key. It's great to only have one key plugged in instead of three (or more!).
The process to transfer licenses is, like flynn said, really straight-forward and easy. The LCC tool has a wizard that tkaes you through it step by step. You should know that for one of the steps you need to be on the internet. My music computer isn't online (gotta be safe!), so I installed LCC on another computer and transferred the license that way. No sweat. You might have to re-register your IK software because the "hardware key" has changed. It's another thing to do, but shouldn't take more than five minutes.
If there's a problem with the transfer, you can just start the transfer again and there's an option for "continue transfer" or "repair tranfer" (or something like that - can't quite remember). I know it works because it happened to me. There was a problem transferring one of my licenses (the process failed for some reason, maybe internet timeout), but I just started it again and it finished fine. No sweat. If you still can't solve it, I've heard Synchrosoft is easy to get in contact with for tech support (though I haven't tried it myself).
Hope that gives you some more confidence.
