I have a filter cutoff that I would like to automate. Say I would like to interlace patterns for this cutoff's automation, is there a way of having regular patterns AND free/drawn patterns on the same slot in the playlist... or do I have to open two instances of this plugin and go from there?

Hi, I'm not really sure what you're asking...but here goes anyways.

If you tweak the cutoff then go to the dropdown in upper left corner of the wrapper for the pluggin you likely will see "Last parameter tweaked". That allows you to select link to controller or create an automation clip. The automation clip must be used in song mode and is placed in the lower section of the playlist. you can drag it out as long as you like and put as many "change points" as you like...I hope that helps

If tweak last parameter is still greyed out you'll need the cc number and you'll need to make a dashboard...which in this case would be quite simple to make.

It seems I haven't been very clear... what I mean is... I would like certain parts of the automation pattern to be hand drawn for irregularity, and certain parts of the pattern to be done by the LFO provided. Is there a way to have two such patterns on the same slot in the piano roll ? ... meaning, is it possible to have a single knob controlled by two different automation clips at different times?

Post

yeah, its possible. Just make sure that they aren't doing it at the same time, because you might get weird results :hihi.

Yes, and its quite simple!
One way, and this method is probally the best, so I only mention this one:

* Insert a Fruity Formula Controller in a slot.
* Automate Fruity Formula Controller "parameter a" with your LFO.
* Go to the pianoroll, now find the "Fruity Formula Controller" in the browser, right-click "b parameter", select: "Edit events in Piano Roll"
* Now insert whatever formula in the Fruity Formula Controller you want, this way gives you the ultimate control!
* Link your Cutoff filter to the Formula Controller-out......ooooohh... magic

This should give you a starter...

Do that in SX please... :hihi:

to further clarify, you would like 2 automation clips assigned to one track or clip in the playlist , correct? so, for instance a drum loop filtered by an LFO for 16 bars, and then hand drawn for 8 bars, and then back to the lfo again for 16 bars?

One work around, -not the best way, is in the piano roll (not the playlist) use the LFO tool to create and lfo shape in a pattern w/ no instruments. Name this Cutoff #1, then in another pattern, draw in the shape you want, cutoff #2. In the playlist, put these patterns where you like to align with other patterns and samples.

not as slick as automation curves in the playlist though.

Ourobouros: that is exactly what I meant. And thank you all for the replies as usual, guys! I am interested, however, in how arke has this working so flawlessly...

Me too!

aaah, I worked out what TRN76 was saying; good stuff. The formula controller essentailly will combine 2 automation signals (in whatever way your formula dictates) into one signal out which can be linked to the filter parameter.

here's an example file:
http://ouroboros.audioshot.net/FLP/2clipautomation.flp

there may still be a better way, but this, at least might get you up and running.

--edit--
the one issue with my example is that the formula adds the values of the two knobs together, so we need to figure out what a formula would be that returns the value for each knob to 0 when not in use.

Thanks for that FLP... it was alot easier to see what was going on. I think its a great workaround if you want some randomized thing going, but for precise filter control like I'd want, it might be a real pain in the butt. To be honest I don't even know that many formulas, and the few I do know, I can't really visualize aside a couple of very simple ones. To be honest, from the moment I saw the formula controller I was pretty sure it was going to be my least used tool in FL  in spite of the fact that I have tremendous respect for what it's capable of... can't help but feel a little impotent because of that... so maybe my old textbooks have renewed uses afterall! :hihi:

Post

no problem :) The formula controller is enough of a mystery I was stoked to get it running correctly. True about the fine controll, though. There really must be some way to do this in the playlist.

When I first said one thing, I mean it.

To use it exacly as you wanted, "a" on the FruityFormula is the switch between LFO/drawnautomation..

Please just open the project and hit play, and look at the filter cutoff... nice ehh

Here is the project file for FLStudio:

Now you can have 2 automations.... Enjoy!

aaaah, excellent thankls TRN! :)
use one knob as a switch between the other two sources -wonderful.
It would have taken me a while to figure out the formulas though, thanks for the file!

TRN, some questions upon further inspection:
where is the LFO driving source knob a and b?, I see the link to c, but not b.

-not to be exclusive, everyone, please participate :)
