there was a thread about this in the ext forum somewhat recently and maybe it's been around before. are there any vsts that allow you access to piece of hardware gear? like you'd put the vst in your host, choose your ins and outs and it would send to your hardware effect and return to the track. anything like this? if not, is it really hard to do?

There's a plugin in Logic (and one in Creamware Scope too) that does this but not heard of a VST.

it's nearly impossible as host application already use audio drivers. it has to be implemented straight in the host.

You should be able to do this in the host. Set up the sending track to output to a dedicated output pair of your audio interface, route a pair of inputs to another track on which you record the effects. Done that many times...

actually, you could get a copy of Synth Edit, and make plugin front ends for all your hardware MIDI stuff.
there are thrd prty modules available that allow the plugin to send MIDI directly out to a MIDI port from the plugin (or SynthEdit itself, if you want), and as far as i know, there is the same for audio.
There is a huge wealth of MIDI stuff available in third party modules, so you could actually build very deep and complex VST front-ends.
Somone did that for the Line6 PodXT, although it was just MIDI, not audio.
just an idea

yes, yes, but in tracktion, this takes up two tracks: one to receive the aux sends and send them to the hardware, and one to return the hardware on (unless there's an easier way i've overlooked). it'd be nice to just basically have my external reverb in a plugin that i could put anywhere i wanted. hmm...You should be able to do this in the host. Yes, it takes two tracks. But do you want your hardware in there, or not??
Nicest thing about recording it onto another track: afterwards you can disconnect the hardware, and use it again on another track. With only one channel strip and multi-effects unit you can process ALL of your channels.
