of course it would :) people would vote on how much the plugin means to them and their use for it. if there's an awesome synth, they'll get sounds they want from it; great fx could give them a new go-to plug for colouring their sounds; interesting new interface tools could give them a whole new favourite way of making music.

i believe there should be no restriction, and originality should be encouraged.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

IMHO originality shines when you do have restrictions, <grin>

E.G. rule 1) the plugin must use one osc, one delay and one filter only.

Hey Count Me In Too !

I guess SE creators will be less likely to win but I'll go for it just for sport :D

now - any rules yet?

Post

Hm, looks like the VST SDK isn't nearly as bad as I thought.

In fact, it seems pretty straightforward. Then again, I haven't actually written anything yet, just looked at example code so far :P

i TOTALLY agree that restrictions make you fly. i just had to solve a paradox for my uni dissertation, which was great fun- knowing that something is 'impossible' leads to very interesting solutions.

however, a limitation like that, when applied to a reasonable number of creators, is at the end of the day likely to result in quite a lot of similar and potentially boring output! the developers can of course put their own restrictions on themselves, but it would be a shame to not allow them to work in an area in which they can really shine. after all, the most original stuff usually contains stuff that hasn't been done elsewhere, right? :)

good points haydxn, <grin>

anyway time frame as only limitation seems poor to me

Yep - I might put some algos open source, but there's no way I'll open source my personal dev environment (you can consider it a geeky variant of SE, SM and Reaktor, with the subtle but nice difference that I have got the sources...)

In respect of rules, I'd go as far as to say:

No rules concerning the type of plugin/application. The result should just be a piece of original freeware.
All entries must be published on the same day. Only beta testers may get the stuff earlier.
Screenshots, demo songs etc. may be published earlier, to tickle the audience and get them mouth watering for day X.

Day X will be a great day generating threads with hundreds of pages, with entries being published every few minutes/hours.

What do you think?

;) Urs

i really like the day x idea. :)

Hi,

I'm considering to join this competition, but have serious doubts i can come up with something new or really good hehe,.
I do feel i should give it a go, just for fun and see what happens.. :) more ppl joining, more fun :P

I'm only using synthedit, and a little bit of C++ ( to build simple SE-modules ).

I haven't even released a complete working synth, only some freeware prefabs and SE-modules.
I do have some old VSTi's, like 2 years old lol ( abandoned learning projects ).
I also have no problem with sharing everything needed for the contest.

old abandoned projects :

my newer stuff is all at SEG download section and the forum ( only registered users can see the source files and screenshots on the forum tho ):

Ditto. I don't think that a time deadline is too much to impose on people.... if there isn't one, then the contest will definitely never end. Plus, "day x" sounds kinda cool. :)

Post

when is day X? I want to mark it in my calendar!

I'd be up for it.

That can _easily_ be used in a 3-osc way (the delay and the filter can be used as "oscillators"). Hm. I got some interesting ideas out of this...

Post

because of my personnal schedule for the next months,
I'd prefer 3 months starting from mid of June.

and I'd like to be able to upload and announce the plugin before the deadline because I might not have an internet connection at that time.

Post

tuz could and should do all that I think.
