How about a cimbalom (hammered dulcimer)?

I would really like to see an in depth sample set of a cimbalom - the Hungarian & Romanian hammered dulcimer (or Greek Santuri, or even the more simple Persian santur). The percussive nature of the instrument would lend itself well to realistc playing (one variation could map the keyboard into two identical halves pitched the same for one finger left & right playing).

Include the variations, such as using padded hammers or straight wood (as the Persian one is), and with dampers on or off (as on the cimbalom). I've searched the net and there is no one who offers an depth sample set.

Have you ever been to Berkeley and see this guy in action?:

Unfortunately, the video has horrible sound quality and is out of sync too... not a good representation of what he and his instrument actually sound like. I bought 2 of his CDs and they are very unconventional, but are perfect for meditation / relaxation / stress relief.

Here's a trailer of an upcomming movie about Michael Masley. That has much better sound... :

No I have not, I like his "mallets" seems and sounds like a combination of bows and mallets.

Yes, he invented them and calls them "Bowhammers":

That's great you're doing another hammered dulcimer, and full blown this time as you say! I hope there is an upgrade path from the santur, because honestly I am not happy with the santur, especially at the $69 price I bought it for when it just came out. The typical signs of it being a sample are too obvious because the same sample often repeats. (It is characteristic of a hammered dulcimer to roll on a single note, thereby quickly revealing this issue.) Usually many velocity layers and/or round-robin counter this effect as you know.

I could have deduced this from the description of it having only 3 velocity layers and the sound of the demos, but I was too optimistic.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to the cimbalom and I hope to be a happy customer of yours. Thanks for all your efforts and attention to unique instruments!
