Hi, there, everyone,

What's the best way to adjust the volume of the individual drums within a soundfont? Can or should you do this from the host itself? I've got a few high quality rock soundfonts and the cymbals are way too loud, and I'd love to only have to run one instance of sfz or something.

Are there "better" soundfont players that let you do this kind of adjusting? Or should I get something that lets me tweak the soundfont itself to my own liking and write this data permanently to the soundfont file?

Anyone in the same quandary after getting some good downloads?

Thanks a lot, and have a great day, everyone,

- Paul

I either use seperate tracks for each sound I want to adjust or add effects to(putting a new instance of the soundfont player on each track), or I extract the samples from the soundfont and put them in a drum sampler.

Soundfonts are troublesome for drums.

I run multiple instances of SFZ and route each to a separate mixer channel. You need some way of routing incoming MIDI to the right SFZ instance for live play -- for sequencing this is easy, of course. Then I use some combination of compression, limiting and plain volume adjustment to get what I'm after. Then I SAVE THE PROJECT before I lose all that good work!

You can edit the soundfont itself using Vienna, Viena, or Awave. Vienna is my fav but requires a Soundblaster card to run. The tips given are good for mixing, but you might as well start with a "rough mix" of correct levels in the soundfont itself. Simply enter appropriate values of "initial attenuation" in dB. Don't forget to try negative numbers in this field and see what it does to the velocity curve (compression). Save with a new name.
