You know, something i really miss (and i'm being genuine here) is whacking a tape on, hearing that "noisy"living sounds wrote:Record it through good converters on a good tape deck using a high qualiy tape - voila.

it reminds me of how shitty guitar players go through five types of distortion at once, it is so much noise you cant hear how bad they are O________________________________O
i think it is simmilar with any type of music on tape when you've got lots of hiss. it makes your imagination work more when you're listening, and i think that activates the parts of the brain through which we recieve enjoyment from music a lot more.
omfg i wasted my 1000th post on you arses.

I have ufo - orb (amongst a few others) and i refuse to buy the cd's cos they just sounds so sweeeeet played on a tape. So much effort was put in to avoid/remove it too. Shameful, or maybe i'ma weirdo...who knows.

That new OtiumFX plugin (Sintefex?) might be of interest to lo-fi'ers everywhere, set to be released at month's end.

mammath,
the plugin is all my work (although bmanic has been involved in betatesting).
bduffy, no need to study MS processing all that much. The plugin pretty much requires reading the manual and it's all explained there. There's plenty of presets and tutorial tracks to demonstrate the correct use of the plugin. You'll be getting good sounds in no time. There is a steep-ish learning curve though, since intra-modulation probably a bit unfamiliar concept to many.
By the way, I wouldn't say this plugin has a lofi sound (seems to happen an awful lot with all these tube/tape crunchers). It generates quite the high-end fattening up, although total destruction if tracks is possible as well. You'll be surprised just how much you can introduce intra-modulation distortion and how things will still sound great (even in mastering!).
I'm quite proud of the sound if I may say so myself.

It's called leader, and I agree I know that feeling well. Its like watching a waiter bringing a plate of buffalo wings to your table; you know its going to be bad for you but so so good.the clear part of the tape (i'm sure it has a cool name

Guess if you can do this with my forthcoming RetroBand plugin?Reverse Engineer wrote:You know, something i really miss (and i'm being genuine here) is whacking a tape on, hearing that "noisy"living sounds wrote:Record it through good converters on a good tape deck using a high qualiy tape - voila.silence as the clear part of the tape (i'm sure it has a cool name

It's the *right* kind of noise it adds as well (but only if you want it to).

Awesome, can't wait. That track I heard that you used it on sounded really great.Kingston wrote:mammath,

...a SERIOUSLY overlookedd group of plugins that I just discovered this week are from Anarchy Sounds. In the very affordable bundle is a Harmonic adder plugin that allows you to select size and frequency of added harmonics, and gives the added harmonics an envelope. I don't really know if that's any good for you, but it's very much worth a try anyway. Some really great plugins there for 30 bucks.

I agree, these are pretty cool plugins, but that Harmonic Adder won't give you analog tape-style sound; it's intended mostly for making freaky sounds. I tried it on a mix and it sounds very artefact-y. A creative tool, I'd say, not a tape emu.Debutante wrote:...a SERIOUSLY overlookedd group of plugins that I just discovered this week are from Anarchy Sounds. It's pretty simple, really. Instead of Left and Right channels, you have a Mid and a Side. The mid contains most of the direct signal, and the side contains the ambience. If you want less ambience, you turn down the Side. Less direct signal? Turn down the Mid...it's a handy trick if you want isolate a signal a bit. The conversion between L/R and M/S is a pretty simple mathematical formula: L=M+S, R=M-SThat reminds to read up on M/S processing.

To be honest, I didn't use much of Retroband in that mix, and only subtly in mastering. (and I'm not actually happy with that sound anymore). It's likely quite difficult to guess what the plug is doing in this one exactly, so don't take this as a demo.
I've since improved the plugin *quite* a bit, and you all get to hear proper A/B demos later.

Thanks aetmos. Right now, I just don't know when someone decides it's time to use it, exactly. What I'm going to do is just mess around with it when I have some time.aetmos wrote:It's pretty simple, really. Instead of Left and Right channels, you have a Mid and a Side. I mentioned your song, Kingston, because I really like the stereo processing in it, it has a kind of "energized" quality to it (sounds really exciting in headphones!), but holds up awesome in mono. Great track too.
