Straight ahead ROCK drum loops?

herodotus - I'm using Sonar. Still not sure how WAV format could be much easier, considering I might like to change or mix and match tempos, etc...

megl - Those tools either seem to have a learning curve to get high quality results, and gobble up way to many RAM/CPU resources, etc. Does toontrack even have loops (midi or otherwise)? I thought those were Kits? I need to be able to quickly cycle through high quality rock grooves and fills that inspire me and I'm not sure those products really do that.

The toontrack products are libraries yes! That's why I suggest using them with Jamstix!

Learning curve ... jamstix and stylus ... eerrrr ... no!! Listen, you've got to put some effort into to it no matter what, but these products are just about the easiest and to use and most inspiring on the planet!

I tried stylus. Like it said it was great, but the loops were not what I'm looking for. even the EXP stuff.

A little effort is fine. But not much. It takes all the fun out of writing the music. I'm a songwriter not an engineer. I used loops 7 years ago back in the sampler days (It was recycle v1, and supported only MONO drum loops at that) and I found that to work for me.. I'd rather drop in a loop that inspires me then mess with high end software that i have to speed days to get a sound I like. By then I forgot why songwriting was so much fun in the first place. It would seem that at least a few of the above posters agree with me.

But I'll look into using Jamstix + C&V together - I guess this combo is better then just using EZdrummer?

Thanks pal. :)

Just checked out EZdrummer and was quite impressed. The sound is not quite as punchy and tight as the Drums on Demand loops though. I have to assume EZD would be more flexible even though I'd be using the included MIDI loops for the most part (not too much different from the REX2 files of DoD when you think about it). I also wonder whether the EZdrummer demos have been EQ'd/compressed/processed, etc to get their 'sound'? I know the DoD loops are polished and pretty much track ready. That saves a lot of extra work...

I share your view 100%. Being myself a songwriter I find little or no enjoyment in trying to program drums: I need a more or less readymade groove/loop to get started with my songwriting. Where I disagree with you (even though I hear you) it's about Stylus RMX: I bought it as a cure to the above mentioned desease, and I find it tosses up useable and cool stuff right away. Also, it has a very modern sheer that challenges me and my personal taste.

Stylus RMX is very cool for sure. Love the way everything sounds so radio ready. But does it allow me access to many variations on the classic rock/pop sound? Sadly no. That's the sound I'm looking for.

How about Submersible Music's "DrumCore"?

I can highly recommend BackBeat from the Classic Drumming Series from Spectrasonics.
It's available in audio and cd rom formats.

Here's a link for ya.:)

I'm a guitarist who knows little about programming drums. Like you, my interests are straight forward rock and pop. When getting started in PC recording about a year ago, I tried a few different things (Battery, DR-008, Jamstix, Slicy Drummer) but ended up getting Groove Agent. I really like it! For getting a basic song constructed, intro, verses, chorus, fills, bridge, etc. there is nothing that could possibly be simpler.

But with all that simplicity you, of course, get limitations. There are just not enough variations of my favorite styles and now I'm looking for something to augment (not replace) Groove Agent. Everyone keeps raving about Stylus RMX, but it seems like there's not too many people using it for basic rock and pop drums. On the other hand BFD seems like way too much work to get a good result.

So I'm leaning toward getting RMX with Backbeat and maybe some other REX libraries. I'd be great to hear from others who are happy with this combination.

Errr ... YES!!! Backbeat, Burning Grooves, your own rex-loops etc etc etc.

I agree that the built-in sound bank is not for you. I don't use it much either. I see RMX as a very advanced REX-player
