So does NI.
Not that I am a fan of C/R, but C/R done right is way better than the dongle. Just goes to show how much I dislike the dongle. Aint no way I would buy one. period.
I *have* to use a dongle for my sequencer(s), and as far as Logic goes, that doesn't seem to change any day soon. Too bad.
But most likely I won't get anything else protected by them anymore, especially since these days I'm on the road a lot.

Btw, I really wonder how companies such as FXpansion get along, they're still using serial numbers only.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Yeah, that really hurts their business!

I didn't know that! Well, I've got LL, now I'll be looking at more of their software in the future. This kind of attitude makes a big difference to me.

They responded to user frustration with needing to reauthorize (say on the weekend and you discover you have reached the authorization limit) and are adding the grace period. That was the part about C/R that frustrated the most as it happened to me once and I could not use Tassman for 2 days in the middle of a project.

There is an addressing of serious concerns there and the C/R allows some give and take. With the dongle, it all falls on the user, who pays the price in time, money, and aggravation. Developers who use dongles gotta be nuts. Not way I am going to spend money on something that I get nothing out of except hassles and could potentially cost me lots more money. What a scam!

It's a bit off-topic, but this sounds like a good idea. I'm storing a backup of all my source code at a friend's place, so that in case something weird happens he can put it all up on source forge under a reasonable open source license (to elaborate: For me, the only reason for going out of business is death or disease, if I was after the money I would already have taken the offers I got in the past). I havn't communicated this so far, but maybe I should.

But hey Urs, you're only using serials anyways.
Of course, if someone would plan to further develop your things for future platforms...

Oh, but you just don't *have* to pass away. At least not earlier than me (and I'm an old fart already).

Same with Cakewalk, ConcreteFX, Image-Line, and many others.

The amount of warez users doesn't have anything to do with the protection. The only thing the protection does is make it more expensive for those that buy it. Do you really think there would be more people using cracked versions of Cubase if it used serials? Hell no, the number wouldn't change one bit.

Urs ... thats a great idea! :tu:

That's a great move on your part Urs. I fully hail you as a developer amongst developers.

Don't get the wrong URS. Remember: Urs makes plugins. URS make plugins.

Well - that only makes me think that you are probably the best advert for your products - self evident to anyone who ever checked out your support forum where you seem to answer the silliest questions with a smile, while churning out beautifully designed plugins. :-)

I don't see the big deal about ILOK, really. I never used ILOK until I decided that I wanted PSP Neon HR. It takes up a USB port--big deal.
What? Your desktop might have 10 USB ports but many portable systems don't have enough and once you start adding peripherals dangling off them you don't have anything so portable anymore.
Very true. With just a modest array of software I now find myself with a large USB hub to accomodate all the I-loks needed to run my DAW. Every USB port on my computer (Mac G4) with the exception of my mouse is used up for audio-related devices and related copyright protections. God forbid I need to print something
