Exactly. Same thing happened on PSP Forum. Some bozo was on there asking for iLok - fine if they want to offer that option but now they have demos linked to iLok for their newest products. I have plenty of their stuff but will not even download their new demos. The funny thing is that the market has plenty of Eqs, compressors and limiters with Serial No C/P - so why would anyone without an iLok ever buy their latest products?

The obvious solution is to provide both methods - Mr Studio Producer who hops from studio to studio can take his licences with him and the rest of us who run a DAW or two can be spared the hassle and expense. Crackers will crack - that's what they do - why punish your paying customers?

I do not think that it is ok to buy software and use the crack for it - as you already are spreading the crack by doing this.
I think that giving a choice is no good idea - as the license for iLok is expensive and giving a choice would jus mean, the the little bit of copy protection plus that iLok has is no longer effective.
iLok vs. Syncrosoft - I cannot see that synchrosoft is working any better than iLok - the version 5 meant endless troubles over at VSL forum for VI users - so they all had to go back to v. 4.9xxx. If somebody calls that working, well, interesting....

I can understand the call for mobility - if you have a computer that is also used by others iLok/dongle is pretty decent if you do not want to act against the license contract. Ok, for EA this less serve as they can install into the user area (well, on Mac of course) and so this is not that much a problem as long as you can convince the admin to get your own user account.

According to a radio program I heard here, their legal advice was that they could do so under the law at that time in the US but the legal opinion is that since the recent changes to the law, they could now not publicise what they found for fear of prosecution. Amazing stuff. A company can introduce viral stuff onto your PC without your knowledge or consent and you cannot even reveal to others that they have done so.
Marvelous isn't it?
OT perhaps inthis thread, but it is truly outstanding how a company can do something that is at the very least unethical/immoral & likely illegal, yet to reveal it to others may leave one open to prosecution due to recent changes in the law - & these are the same companies that have been pushing for fairly unrestricted access to peoples private information (isp records etc.) to combat piracy (& it's apparent links to international terrorism) etc. in the EU (records that the FBI will now also apparently be able to access also).
Welcome to the united states of sony/warner/fox ... whatever - you are free to do whatever you want (as long as it can potentially have a negative impact on our profits - in which case you are not free & will stand a good chance of being prosecuted with the full force of the law).
The particular example with the rootkits is an example of what a facade our ostensible 'democracy' is & how weighted the legal & political system is in favour of these huge companies.
Rant.. rant.... rant... :D

That makes no sense from the customer's perspective. Those issues are developer issues and developers who want to deal with iLok should not make it necessary that their existing customers have to deal with iLok. If anything, they should offer the iLok version at a cost premium for those that want that facility and leave the serial number system in place at the existing cost for those that don't. If they decide to screw their serial number customers who have supported them for years then they deserve whatever they get from the net denizens.

iLok dongles are requested by retailers - not by users. Retailers also require RTAS support. :)

That's interesting. Why? You'd think they don't give a flying fart, since their bottom line is sales. Unless... ilok and RTAS sell more.
