Cubase to Sonar 5: VST working well?

Hi
it was:
I am [edit: no longer] seriously thinking of switching from Cubase to Sonar.
Edited after a short demoing. I guess I'll have to live with Cubase and its dongle, because.....I can't really take a couple of weeks off to learn Sonar. I recall switching from Logic to Cubase was a piece of cake. I only occasionally needed to dig the manual.
Actually it ain't really that complex, but it's like three times less intuitive than Cubase: all those tiny icons, WTF? Huge disappointment. The GUI was a huge put off as well.
Sad to say, cause I really wanted to fall in love with it: I have issues with Steinberg, but....ain't switching yet. Maybe when Tracktion has reached version 3, then I'll check it out (on a second thought, I may as well check it out now).

Unless you're willing to take a lot of time off to sit and learn a brand new host, it probably wouldn't be worth it. Any host will take time to learn. But I also think you'd find Sonar a little too disorienting when you're used to Cubase. I've been thinking a bit about switching also, and I've been checking out Tracktion, but I have to agree: I'm hoping for some big changes in v3; then I might be able to think about switching.
But the thought of not having that sweet, sweet VST Mixer...

Yeah, me too.StrangeCat wrote:eeeeh? what's wrong with Cubase? I switched from Sonar to Cubase and Cubase is a Dream!!!
Well, for me, a get a little tired of the startup time, the way you can't change Group track orders once you create them, Cubase can be rather bitchy to stabilize, nasty crashes...I can't remember my list right now, I've had ribald discussions with Kritikon and Sascha Frank about them here. Sometimes you just think Cubase could be a little less rigid, you know?
But then again, there's the mixer, with the robust automation and feel, It's easy to edit sliced loops, MIDI features are excellent (even if VST5 users still missing something) the sheer power and depth is amazing, and there isn't anything out there that can replace it now. I still really enjoying mixing in it when I get going. I'll probably never switch. Same with Kontakt, which I keep threatening to!

I am way to new to it as I have only just started a project in it a week ago and was then finishing up something (dreaded sonar)
But so far it's like a dream! hell just the way it looks and feels is so streamlined. I am to new to really comment much on it. Luckly i have friends in the musiz biz that have been using it for years to help me out.
in my honest opinion Sonar looks and feels clunky and like a toy compared to SX3...hey that's just my opinion on that^_-
Kontakt2.1 is Bad Ass now! Works great and even Gs3 is converting man thank you chicksystems LOL! has to be that guy over at NI now.

Hey, I'm glad you're loving Cubase - but you really should consider keeping comments like "Sonar is like a toy" down a bit. I mean, say what you want, but people feel strongly about their hosts, and imagine is a Sonar user came along and said "Cubase sucks" - you'd feel the same. Then the shouting, and the screaming and the fighting...StrangeCat wrote:I am way to new to it as I have only just started a project in it a week ago and was then finishing up something (dreaded sonar)

well the difference being, cubase DOES suck, whilst sonar, although imperfect, and still has some flaws, is innovative more so than cubarse

I only have one friend that uses Sx now, it had been a while since i've seen him & played with it.
So, anyways - when are they going to add drag & dropping of effects etc? & more flexible grouping? - or is that all tied in somehow with the overly complicated generic remote control.
It does some cool stuff for sure, but I kept wanting to drag effects around & route stuff in different ways (verb to delay, delay to verb etc.) - & it wouldn't let me, due to the ordering of the tracks, bit frustrating.
Still love the groove quantizing though & the way the piano roll adapts itself & shows you the groove - great for ripping some of the feel of a drumloop etc. (wish ableton Live had that particular little trick up it's sleeve).

LOL. Yeah I was happy with Cubase and I was using Cubase SL system 4 which uses an audio interface instead of a dongle. When I was agonizing over upgrading to SX3, agonizing because of the dongle, I decided to try to learn to like Sonar for no reason other than the fact that it's copy protection wouldn't be a bother to me. But there was no way. Sonar just doesn't do it for me. I went ahead and took the SX3/dongle route and all I can say is, as long as nothing goes wrong, I'm fine. The minute something goes wrong, I'll be screaming mad about the dongle, and things occasionally do go wrong. At one point, every time I booted up my computer, then launched Cubase, the dongle/license would fail and I had to go around back and unplug, then plug the dongle back in, to get Cubase started up. I also have Hypersonic 2 which is also dongled. One time I launched Hypersonic in the middle of a project I was working on in Orion and the dongle again failed. I unplugged/replugged the dongle and the project crashed and I lost what I'd been working on. I was pissed and immediately thinking about cracks. But for me, SX is the only game in town so I'm stuck dealing with the dongle. I worry about breaking the dongle. The dongle that came in my Hypersonic box was cracked when I got it. I put the license on my Cubase dongle so I've never actually used it. To make matters wors, Cubase makes no effort to protect the dongle inside the packaging. They literally just throw the dongle in the bottom of the box. If you pick up a Cubase box in a store, you can shake the box and hear the dongle just banging around inside the box. I own SX3, Hypersonic, and Halion and this was the case with all three.StrangeCat wrote:eeeeh? what's wrong with Cubase? I switched from Sonar to Cubase and Cubase is a Dream!!!

Reasons to switch?
Sonar's nice. I found it to be easier to use than Cubase. It suits me a little better. I don't see that your learning curve would be all that huge.

Trust me, it's hard to go back to Sonar. It looks like he changed his mind. You know how it is: tough decisions picking software that costs a decent amount.RTaylor wrote:So... what were you looking for in here?leonard wrote:Hi
