808/909 sampling project - first free 129 samples

Hi there,
here are the first samples of my 808/909 sampling project.
I used a LynxTWO soundcard and a highly-optimized PSU for sampling.
I just have sampled 128 TUNE-settings of the bassdrum in 96 kHz, 24 bit.
Then I have cut the single WAVs with a tool a friend wrote for me.
After that I converted them to 44.1 kHz with modified SSRC.
I used velocity 127 ... that's why they might sound distorted.
But other settings will follow. I want the most complete sampling-set ever.
The WAVs will be used to power up a software-sampler with the GUI of 808/909.
It takes about 4 x 19 hours to sample any instrument of the machines, so
recording will take some weeks. Then some weeks of cutting. Argh.
I want to make the result free for anyone, but I need your support.
How do the samples sound? Are 127-129 settings too much?
You can download the first 129 WAVs here:

Sounds a good project - Iv actualy got an 808.
YOu want the best quality. You have tune it down if you want it to mix whith a normal Kit(its about 3) and the bass drum a little bit lower. The 909 has to be about 4 I think.
Its too late for me too download now but I might tomorow if I can.
Good luck, Im interested

I tried the samples and think you would be better off just sampling once at every ten volume changes or so. Many of the samples are so close in pitch that I can't tell the difference. The highest pitches start sounding like a tom rather than bass. The sound quality is excellent so I'd be interested in hearing a complete set, bass snare etc.

Hi:
I tryed the samples and sounds really good.
I think the interval between pitches is OK
for your project (You plan load this in a
custom sampler with knobs right?).
I have a question:
The original 808 don't have tuning on the BD.
Do you modified it or are you using an
emulation? (Drumstation, Jomox, etc)

Yeah, you've got me. I'm using a hardware emulation.sebo wrote:The original 808 don't have tuning on the BD.

At this point, I don't want to say which one (legit issues).
The hardware isn't sold anymore ... so I think, I won't get much trouble.
Is it bad for the project to use an emulation? It's a VERY good one.

yes, to be honest i think it should be an 808 you are sampling. otherwise what's the point? its a bit like N.I. using a Nord Electro to create Electrik Piano!

hey, its just my opinion. i COULD be wrong..
was it goin gto be free or paid for, the end result? if free, don't worry. if you were gonna sell it, then i think you have to state that its not an 808 -if its a Jo mox or something, i think people would be interested in that anyway, as it is...
or just hire an 808 for 2 days -pretty cheap.

For two days? I don't think, all the sampling can be done in two days.
For hardware, I need to create special electronics: a stepping-motor, which moves the pots automatically.
Anyone here from Germany with a 909 or 808? Perhaps comparing sounds would be enough

There are few site whith the TR808, .....mmmmm Hollow Sun use to offer a set for free.......mmmmm..
There was this realy good site dedicated just to the 808 whith a very comprehensive sample set of the 808
"The Roland TR808 - The ultimate TR808 resource site". http://www.pornopalace.nl/TR-808/home.htm (the link does not seem to work anymore?)
small extract
...making for a grand total of 116 sound samples of the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer!
These samples were taken _DIRECTLY_ from a Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer (SERIAL NO. 103852). They are _NOT_ samples of samples (i.e. sampled from a recent drum machine, such as the Boss DR-660, Roland R-8, R-8MkII, etc...) In other words, these samples were taken from a REAL TR-808. All samples were recorded from the individual sound outputs (I did NOT use the "HI" or "LO" "LEVEL" "MASTER OUT"puts!). While being recorded, each sound (on the TR-808) was at highest volume level (with all other volume levels set to the lowest possible setting), and the master volume (on the TR-808) was always at the lowest setting. All samples were made using SoundEdit 16 1.0.0 on a Macintosh Quadra 660AV.
EACH and EVERY sample is at 16-Bit, 44.1kHz resolution and was CAREFULLY generated, sampled, selected (I recorded many hits of the same sound, and picked the one that I felt best represented the average of that particular sound) and edited.
I think I would prefered them at 88kHz at least. The way he has done the tombs is, he has sampled a number of steps on the tombs tuning knob. Anyway, the 808 preset on the CM SR202 is not too bad.
Oh, my 808 serial number is 1041060 (254 units later)
