I hear a lot about Waves being so high priced. I'm just a hobbyist at best. I looked at all that was out there and compared prices. For the small guy I see Waves as being reasonable.

Yes, I understand the Ilok issues.
Yes, I understand their individual plugs are high.
Yes, I understand their WUP is weird.
Yes, I understand some of their plugs are outdated.
Yes, I understand in the larger bundles there are some not-needed plugs

But…look below. I sought to compare comparable products for a small home studio to get by with the basic essentials. I understand you can do similar comparisons and I am not trying to wave the Waves banner or start any arguments here.

Kjaerhus has a nice full package - sounds are great but… no verb.
Gold Bundle - no verb
$427.00

Voxengo has many great plugs and variations in packages but to get all the essentials (EQ, comp, chorus/delay, limiter, verb, etc.) you could spend close to $450 or more - for example…

Pristine Space $118.00
The CurveEQ, Elephant, Soniform, Transmodder package $ 209.00
Analogflux $ 79.00
Marquis Comp $ 89.00
$ 495.00

Now look at a Waves combo package...

Waves Musicians Bundle II
Super Tap, Ren EQ, Ren Comp, RenVox, Doubler = $150.00
Waves Native Power Pack
Trueverb, Q10 EQ, DeEsser, L1 Ultramximizer+, S1 Stereo Imager, C1 Para Compander, IR-1 Verb, Raxx = $350.00
Ilok - $ 40.00

Total for Bundle II and Power Pack and Ilok is $540.00

Now - here Waves is reasonable - you get 13 useable plugs for just $100 more than the other 2 (depending on the variations).

And yes, I understand all ears are different. 8)

What about the cost of the Waves Update Plan?

The Waves Power Pack alone is more of a bargin without the WMBII. Since it comes with Doubler and Super Tap.

1. I'm guessing for the Power Pak - $60 - but if you don't care to upgrade then don't - Waves tech told me as long as I have my Ilok I can load what I presently have.

2. You are absolutley right - plus it also comes with IR-L Verb!

My point here is the small hobbyist can get a professional set of plugs without breaking his bank.

All under assumption that Waves are better... which is very discussionable. I think they're outdated, outpaced and out alltogether. Nowadays, for many of their plugs, you can find an equal if not better freeware or cheaper alternative. There was a time when I'd say that RCL and L2 were the best, but those times are water under the bridge. There are so many alternatives to each of those plugs that for some I still cannot decide which one to use.

Yep, just IMHO.

Cheers!

in 1998ish Waves were the shiz.

in 2006 they are not so much so.

this is nothing new

plenty of people have stated this before here.

was interesting to see it broken down, though.

well, i used waves all the time back on tdm, but one thing is for sure:
it's ordinary algorithms of each plugin (exept ren.comp). they're nothing special.
there is even freeware out there that has better algorithms.
time overruled waves imo.
i can understand them though, making the most out of the name that was (still is) so big i would do too .

i don't speak about the s-series though, as i don't know them.

please point me to the free plugs that are better than waves. Please tell me what plug exactly you are comparing it to so I can compare. TY

Aren't there already a million threads on this?

well, don't get me wrong:
there's nothing identical.
seeing it from that way, of course the waves are unique.
but since you've talked about the price vs. what you get from it, thats something else ...
also, there is of course payware out there that is way cheaper than waves, but gives similar/better quality (i.e. buzzroom bundle)...
compression:
l1=george's de young w1 limiter
ren. comp.=vanilla compressor, mda dynamics (highly underrated),
blockfish ...
supertap: mg delay, more feedback machine from u-he ... just name another delay, it's mostly more in sync than supertap ...
reverb: kjearhus classic series reverb
... and so on ...
i'm just too lazy to find/remember/count'em off, so i took the highquality-ones here that are outdated by freeware ...
the only thing that i miss is a cool pitch shifter with formant correction, similar to the waves pitch, allthough thatone (don't remember the name) wasn't good, too ...
wave-mechanics pure-pitch was much better ...

Most of these plugs can more than get the job done. If I had an iLOK, I would like to compare the CPU usage of the plugs mentioned above. Because going over the $400 mark would justify buying a UAD-1...

Waves spectrum analyzer thingie = Voxengo SPAN
Waves RCL = vanilla comp, blockfish, buzzroom betas etc.
Waves RenEQ = Posihfopit (which is far superior)
Waves L2 = TLS stuff and W1 like brok mentioned and also some buzzroom stuff
Waves Reverbs = Ambience, Kjaerhus Classic, Glace etc.
Waves S1 = Voxengo MSED + MDA stereo thingy

Bottom line:

Waves yadda yadda = Freeware yadda yadda yadda (usually superior)

Cheers!

Better is subject to one's ears - I understand this. I like them as a pacakage - I reall like the RenEQ and Comp - the doubler is unique and the Trueverb just works for me but....
The more I listen to Wizoo Verb the more I like it but just don't want to fork out the $200 for 1 plug.

My point of the original post was to show that Waves' smaller packages are good buys and their plugs are good plugs to get a hobbyist going.

I know there are better plugs out there but for $540 or so one can get his tracks and mixing going pretty good.
