Hi all,

I've just uploaded a wee plugin with the stupid name of 'Feedback-y Thing':

It's basically a delay set to use very short delay times and high levels of feedback, to generate a kind of fake guitar amp feedback effect. It's derived from the delay I'm working on for the multi-effects plugin I'm doing with shamann, after I found myself using that delay for exactly this purpose. Due to a maths error on my part, the boost control (i.e. feedback) actually goes past 100% feedback, so if you turn it up even a bit, the feedback will never decay, only get more and more like a square wave...

Get it from here. As usual, it's open source, and for Windows and OSX VST (ppc-only though).

Oh poop. I meant to reply to your email this past weekend, but forgot to.

I like the sound when the pitch is set fairly high. Lower pitch sounded more granular/delay-like. One thing that struck me would be cool if you could manage to have some sort of pitch detection, so that the feedback pitch adjusted sympathetically to the input.

But, nevermind, don't let it distract you from our thing.

. Not sure about the pitch detection though - it would be cool, but I think decent pitch detection is hard, and needs some complicated maths to work right...

And shamann's pitch detection would just be the bomb. Not that I'm trying to put any pressure on you.. nudge, nudge...

ok,i tried it out,did you know when you turn the pitch right up it does a delay loop of the last bit,which was odd,but quite good,and gave some nice sounds.
but cos you never mentioned it,maybe it's not supposed to do it?
with normal use,though,it did do what it was meant to do quite nicely.

it's a good start.are you planning on doing more to this one?or is it just a side product?
it would be good if it changed pitch itself,i sort of remember guitars would go higher(octaves?) when left to feed back,and obviously change when moved,don't know how you could emu that,a 'movement' joystick?
i don't know much about the feedback theory,but i do know it would be welcome.

Yeah, that's a mistake. Because it's just a delay, what's happening when you change the pitch value is that you're changing the delay time (in very small increments). It sounds like the delay's read pointer is going past the end/start of the delay and looping back, so instead of the feedback-type sound you get from a really short delay, you get the maximum delay length. It's not like it's the kind of thing that's going to crash your computer or do any harm though, so I'm not sure there's really any need to fix it - I'll just pretend it was deliberate, a secret feature

i don't know much about the feedback theory,but i do know it would be welcome.

This plugin will stay as it is, but its big brother delay is part of the plugin I'm working on with shamann, and that will have all sorts of modulation options, so yeah, it'll be possible to have the pitch change on its own (you'll have to wait a bit before that plugin's ready, though). It's only really a 'pseudo-feedback' effect though, the only way to emulate the distance between guitar and amp is by playing with the pitch knob. I think modelling the actual complex interactions that occur between a guitar and an amp when they're feeding back would be a very complicated task (I reckon you'd have to model the guitar, the amp, the room, the humidity of the air etc...), and this is just a simple delay, tuned to sound a bit like guitar feedback.
