presets.. :bang:

Here's a better idea Stefan: put a large friendly looking "presets" button on the GUI which, when pressed, will scan the user's plug-in folder and securely delete all dynamics and EQ plugs, including itself. :P

Hi Stefan,

Thanks a lot for this update. I really like this plugin since version 004! Now I've just installed the latest version 011 on my pc and it keeps crashing wavelab...
The previous version worked fine on it, so is there a possibility you checked it out?

Really, thanks a lot dude.

Darnit, you guys have really been active here over night! Will have a look at the stuff you request (might resize the guis, even if I think they really are of a good size :)). Reducing CPU usage further might be tricky, and it uses about 4-5% on my Athlon64 3200+ and 5% on a P4 3.4GHz. I don't know why it uses TWICE as much on a 2.6GHz under Live.

I find making lots of presets for EQ's/Compressors hard, mainly because I never use them myself. Maybe someone could help me out with this later on, when I reach a stable feature set etc?

Sparrow: Dang, must be rectified. The only audio editor I tested it in this last time was Audition, I guess we must've re-introduced some wavelab issue :)

Why not just generate them randomly and give them arbitrary names like "acoustic guitar" and "female vox"?

Don't waste any time on them anyway: presets for compressors and EQs are worse than useless IMO, as they imply that you can use them without understanding what you are doing, or listening to the results critically.

I've been working on a new version of the compressor, but before I finish it for release I'd like to get your input on something.
Do you think it would be useful to be able to choose the shape of the clipper on the output? I got four shapes at the moment. The original (which you've already used and is a soft foldback distortion thingy), a normal soft clipper (tanh approximation), tanh / hard clip mix and ordinary hard clip. I could make these selectable by displaying the clippers shape and letting you change it by clicking on it or something.

I've also reduced the CPU usage some more and made the GUI a bit larger.

Sorry for not updating the EQ in a while, I need to add some filter stability safety mechanism before I do. But I've added input and output gain stages, plus saturation indicators for each band (looks quite like a disco!).

ahhh, great, stefan ... i'll try'em as soon as i buildt up my studio again ...

Was there a response to the question in there? :) Do you think being able to pick the shape for the clipper is a good idea or just bloat? It looks rather fancy gui-wise atleast... ;)

Yes, why not?

sorry, i was just exited about the eq stuff you posted that i forgot to answer:
yeah, selecting shapes would be nice, but how about the possibility to not select them, but dial them in, steppless, from one characterisic curve to another? :)

Since I have more than two basic shapes that would probably end up being tricky. Having four different ones instead of just one might suffice, don't you think? I could easily add a few mixed modes between the classical soft clipper and the hard clipper.

What disturbs me the most though is that most of the time I prefer the sound of the hard clipper shape :-o

thats natural, as it preserves the transients of the maybe left open attack of the compressor better than deeper curves (i.e. on drums) ...
guess i have to try first before i state my opinion ... but i can't ...

Presets:
I actually think maybe 8 - 10 presets per plugin will be useful. They're meant to be starting points, not exacts of how you want to sculpt your sound. They're also useful when you want to compress the hell out of a drumloop or do some crazy EQing to a vocal for fun.

GUI:
I think the size is fine. If you increased it to be 10% larger to help that would be great, but don't make it huge - I like these cute and shiny little guys!

Hey Stefancrs, I just found a bug in the compressor (SM_Comp011a): When I re-open a project, the compressor seems to reset its settings and produce just distortion. This is in Cubase SX 2.2.

Post

How is this going on? Any news stefanrcs? This compressor is very interesting, and broad sounding, I'd be very glad to see it completed and more or less bugs-ridden... it sounds quite interesting on drums. Also, can't wait to see the new EQ .

Hey :)
Yeah I've been working on new versions but been quite held back by other commitments as well ( :( ). The EQ has started turning out to be a quite awesome distortion unit as well. Just because of that, I added feedback control as well :) Both GUI's are a fair bit bigger, you can now select clipper mode visually on the compressor etc. But they aren't prime for a new release just yet. Working on it though!
