You guys are upset that she has borrowed the riff from the COVER version of Tainted Love? Were you upset when softcell used lyrics and everything from the original?
Pah.
It's a cool tune

Six degrees of seperation dosen't keep the song from being a worthless pile of kak.Jason Brian Merrill wrote:lolstefancrs wrote:You guys are upset that she has borrowed the riff from the COVER version of Tainted Love? Were you upset when softcell used lyrics and everything from the original?

God, I envy the prodcer for that tune though. Lord knows he made bank and did absolutely jack shit.
"Ok, rite - we'll contact their people and get the recordings from Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' liscensed to us, and then we'll record you singing a few times on top of that and we'll have a cell-phone ringtone hit!"

The "Every Breath You Take" cover/rip off from around 2000-2001 was the absolute worst of these...these...things that are becoming so common._oswald wrote:Six degrees of seperation dosen't keep the song from being a worthless pile of kak.Jason Brian Merrill wrote:lolstefancrs wrote:You guys are upset that she has borrowed the riff from the COVER version of Tainted Love? It's great how the industry is trying to totally eliminate the original songwriter as a class from the process of making hit records.
Makes it so much easier for projects to get done really quickly, and you don't have to pay royalties to anyone new!!

Jason, I actually thought you were serious about the Irish thing, sort of-- in other words, I thought there WAS an Irish song with the same chord progression, but I also figured you just meant it as a way of saying, "It ain't exactly compositional genius and originality in the first place".
I stand corrected.
_oswald, if you like Petty you should really give the Jayhawks a listen. Not the "same" (more country than rock) but in the same category.

A sampled ripoffs is not in the same category as a cover version. That'd be like saying a DJ is a composer. The Chase wrote:Finally someone with sense!stefancrs wrote:You guys are upset that she has borrowed the riff from the COVER version of Tainted Love? It's just a remix for silly's sake! Why take out the entire concept of a remix on this one pop song? And only a fraction of the synth sounds are actually sampled from the original.Cabinfever wrote:A sampled ripoffs is not in the same category as a cover version. And it's not even that bad of a song.

I also thought it was so-so when I first heard ist. But this song is actually pretty stirring. In addition, Rihanna isn't that bad as a singer, very expressive vocals.
The fact that this song is almost only one repeated loop is probably the way they do it nowadays. Without the good vocals it would be actually pretty dumb

I'm actually not a Petty fan, but I'm more of a Petty fan than a goddamn RHCP fan.Lunch Money wrote: _oswald, if you like Petty you should really give the Jayhawks a listen. Not the "same" (more country than rock) but in the same category.
And maybe I will look into them, after I get out of my Megadeth kick. Right now it's all about Rust in Peace.

It's a f**king shite song and I don't understand why so many people are defending the tripe. If it were food, I wouldn't feed it to a badger.

It's a bit ironic having a thread complaining about SOS when Soft Cell covered the original version of 'Tainted Love'.
I think SOS is a lot better than some of the other Soft Cell covers/mash-ups over the years but I agree popular music is in a sorry state of affairs and SOS does nothing to help this. (I'm watching TOTP with Preston 'the Pratt' and wondering why I torture myself like this.)
I thought Madonnas rip of Abba was quite ingenius but then she's always had the help of some clever people. I suppose it's what you rip and how it done that determines how clever and inspirational it is.
Just watched Nerina Pallot singing an anti-war song. 'Kin 'ell! How radical for TOTP. Sounds quite good too but sounds distrubingly like The Pretenders. Preston sneers redundantly, "Political! and Fern giggles in collusion - cull the youth!
