You should check the new GIGA player..
HALion is a great Giga ripper! but all new GIGA 3 formats are protected. You can't load them to an other sampler. HALion 3 libraries are also protected.
ALso! no matter what! you always have to fix some parameters when importing one format to an other!
Try getting HALion 2.0.3.5 on Ebay! for like $40 and you can import Giga 2.5 etc...
NO Giga 3 !!!

the cheapest giga player is pretty cheap - just under £100 and will play all your giga libraries well and can connect by re-wire
in fact if your in the us its currently available from tascam at $79 - go get it

I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

It's not a vst plug, for a start

Yes it is.marcouk wrote: It's not a vst plug, for a start
Bloatware, maybe. But it's free, which was your stated criterion. There's no other free VST which plays Gigasamples as far as I know

Not true - Kontakt 2 loads Giga 3 just fine.GIRO wrote:HALion is a great Giga ripper! but all new GIGA 3 formats are protected. You can't load them to an other sampler.marcouk wrote:Any free plug that will play samples in Giga format? If not, what's best bet in commercial plug to play them?
This is correct, unfortunately. In fact, EVERY HALion file is protected. Bad for the enduser, unless you'll use HALion the rest of your life.GIRO wrote:HALion 3 libraries are also protected.
Or just get Kontakt 2 and load Giga 3 things.GIRO wrote:Try getting HALion 2.0.3.5 on Ebay! for like $40 and you can import Giga 2.5 etc... NO Giga 3 !!!
But the original question is sort of silly. Why would you want a free plugin that loads Giga things? Giga files are usually large, need to be streamed, etc. They need a powerful sampler to get the results.
Get a real sampler, not a free one. Kontakt 2 is the best choice - or for heavens sake, just buy Giga. Giga 3 Solo is usually only $150 at the very lowest. I'll sell one to you (brand new in the box) if you want.

Here are three very good sample format converters:
Extreme Sample Converter
CD Extract
Chicken Systems Translator
Google to find 'em, it's easy. They're all pretty reasonably priced. EXSC has a great loop editor. All have free modes (or at least did). EXSC's demo limitation is that it clips the samples to 8 or 10 bits, so the resulting sound has lots of quantization noise. CDE's limitation is you can only create single-preset results.
