The beats that FLstudio cannot handle.

I have a problem here.

this beat i came up with, maybe its my lack of time signature knowledge, i dont know -- but i cant get it working in FL studio. it always ends with a long pause at the end of it, and when i choose a different meter or shorten the amount of steps in the sequencer, it never fits quite right.

heres a picture:

the yellow line is where i WANT the beat to end, the Red line is where it ends.

This is, to me, a bad limitation of FLstudio... even if i get this beat "working", it will never line up in the playlist right, esp. if i have other parts in different time signatures.

here is a midi and an mp3 file of the beat:

please prove me wrong. I just want to be able to use this beat like any other pattern in FL...

btw, ive already tried holding shift and scaling down the notes to the left, and it still seems off... like, what time signature is this even in?

that's 2 measures of 4/4 with an extra note (hihat) on the end.

9/8 ?

Post

I figured yes, it was 9/8 cause its alot like "never the machine forever" by soundgarden...

and yes, the chase, its definetly 2 4/4's with an extra hi hat..

but how do i make it work in FL?

Maybe just a naive workaround, but make it two bars in 4/4, and move the hi hat to another pattern and rearange it all in the playlist.
At least that's how I handle those things.

Hi,
Have tried 'overlapping' the pattern in the playlist?

The beat is just over 2 bars long, but if you load it again and move the second instance back to start at bar 3, it plays back correctly. Do this as many times as you need, you'll still have that gap right at the end, but at least you can use it.

Alternatively, you can copy the beat to another pattern and overlap them as above.

I'm sure as hell no FLS expert, and I daresay there's a better way of doing this.

Something you can do is change other patterns around so that everything is double time -- what was 2 beats long before is now 4 beats long, etc. .. then, in the step sequencer window, you can tell that pattern to be 9 beats long. Then it'll line up.

Post

another work around is to manually repeat it 4 times to set it up as a 5 bar (4/4) pattern so it'll loop on a beat. the problem with this is that you're stuck with a long pattern, though i think you can then use the knife tool in the playlist

fwiw my host logic pc 4.8.1 (a few years old, but 'logic's supposed to do these kinds of things!') has similar issues..

eg. do a 17/8 measure and objects/loop points et c. want to snap to 4/4 (output can be correct tho, just not all amenities)

remember us, host devs!
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

have you tried exporting the loop to a wav and loading it as a sound file in the space underneath the patterns?

At first glance, it looks like it should be 9/8, but it isn't. 9/8 will leave one more eighth note at the end of the second measure. Whatever you do to this beat, it's going to sound a little weird, but what you want to do is leave it at 4/4 and just make it 4 measures instead of 2. Expand on the beat so that it fits if you really don't want to edit what's already there.

In my experience, FL never handled time signatures very well. Even my Sonar is kind of weird with that.

well, you could handle it easily with eXT but so far you neglected all my offers to help you getting it up and running...

so there are 'host devs' who 'remember us'... :P

Well I don't know anything about how to get it to work in FLS, but that pattern is in 17/8 NOT 9/8. Presumably there is some way to set this in FLS somewhere.
