I know this may sound like a dumb question - but i am trying to get into using the excellent FreeAmpSE 1.5 and want to know - what does an electric guitar sound like before any amps/stompboxes are applied? Strummed and picked...so i can work out how to recreate it with samples...

or does anyone know of a good "clean" electric guitar soundfont that plays well through amp/stomp modelling effects?

Post

There is one font by gregjazz that does exactly that - and very good at it too - it was in the auditorium - but due to a number of things the sample section in the auditorium is gone - and few of the sample sets that were there are being added to http://audioshots.com download section - where it's a free download - but the downloads are better managed.

I will try and get the Ultimate Guitar Kit back up - but a big request is that no one direct links to the files.

Best regards,

Spe3d

IANAGP (I am not a guitar player), but I gather that the wood, the strings and the pickups affect the tone (voice) of the guitar even before it goes out the cable to effects and an amp, so it's difficult to hear the completely uncolored electric voice of a guitar

even so, here are two guitars, unplugged and played to an external mic
5 twelve

thanks Spe3D i will dowload and try it now...and yes havran thanks for that too :)

Do you really mean without an amp, or without all the distortion that some people think has to go with guitar?

Post

yes i meant without an amp...so i can use FreeAmp to deal with that...got any soundfonts like that?

but that guitar kit spe3d gave me was great...

Yeah, the Ultimate Guitar Kit is sampled completely dry... not even EQ or compressor, so that sounds like what you were looking for.

Amps add 'colour' to the sound

If a font is recorded as a Direct Input - then 'amp' simulations can be used to emulate the many hundreds of amp variations that have been and are in existence today with software. - as well as the obvious additional distortion, chorus, phase and delay effects.

The Ultimate Guitar Kit designed and recorded by Gregjazz took this into consideration when making the sound font - its why it was so popular as it works very well with amp sims and effects.

Gregjazz - is it just me or do the lead guitars different sample layers (muted, normal, and vibrato) not scale in volume depending on velocity? It seems to be not so....

I understand that the mute samples are in the low velocity, and you obviously dont want them to be quiet - your using velocity to distinguish playing style and not volume....

But could you at least make the 0-20 range play a volume scaled mute sample? currently it seems not to play any sample if i play a note with velocity below 20...and maybe some fixed, predictable volume variation through the 21-127 velocities to make it a little more real...

Hmmm, that's strange. I meant for it to scale in volume depending on velocity, and that's how it acts when I use it...

it wasnt working for me a second ago in sfz with my midi keyboard - but then i just opened it up in FL Soundfont Player and the volume is scaling now :|

Its still not playing anything below 20 tho...
