question about cubase sx3 and automated effects

I want to know how to do an automated lo pass filter with cubase. Basically how you can automate the volume levels with the r w and dots pointing out the levels.

play the song

do the sweep (or whatever) manually

stop the song

turn off the W

turn on the R(ead)

play the song

presto
