How To Setup Drum Samples

Hello,
This is probably a really newbie question, but if I had a selection of drum hit wav samples, what is the best way to use them as a "drum machine"? I want to use a MIDI controller to trigger the samples like a drum kit. Drumatic is nice, but can I replace the sounds it uses with my own wav samples, because then I could also employ some of its built-in effects? Should I use a simple VST sampler that usually comes with sequencing hosts these days?
Thanks,
Chinmay

One cheap way that I use, is to buy a SoundBlaster Live or Audigy card and download the freeware Vienna graphic editor. This will allow you to turn your wav files into a Soundfont. Soundfont files can be played by most popular samplers including the freeware "sfz" from www.rgcaudio.com or the _hardware_ sampler built into the card.
You can buy a Soundblaster for about $10-$15 and the rest is free.
Or just go buy Kontakt or Battery from Native Instruments.
Bottom line: just about any sampler can do what you want. Many hosts include a sampler that will do the job. If you are planning to do recording, I recommend Cubase LE/SE, Sonar, or Tracktion as a host.
