I'm sad that Apple drags MS to this eye-candy resource-hog bullshit... making a superlean OS (not talking bout n-lite et al) designed for notebooks to maximise comfort with touchpad while maximising battery life could be very profitable now.

I'd love to have my OS to sniff on launching whether I'm nomading on battery, wlan turned off or docked at home, and adjust startup programs accordingly.

This is quite true, there's also very nice looking PIMs in that Suse package. Tho Xara is originally Windows and not yet mature on X.

XP is pretty much good enough to be honest. It would have to be really special to get me to use Linux, and even then I use a lot of programs that aren't Linux compatible, so I would probably still keep XP.

whatever some of the Linux fans might say: XP (=Windows NT) is very good for audio - it is a very modern os (much more modern than Linux actually which is still based on ancient Unix standards)...

Unices had multiuser, multitasking, far better filesystems, networking, graphics capabilities (now defunct SGI) long time ago when Win ("3.x") was piece of crap. Because of OEMs were installing it Win could propagate. It wasn't on any technical merits and it's very easy to see comparing any Win and any given time with other OSes like NextStep, BeOS, OS/2, even ancient AmigaOS or TOS/GEM in Atari. Yes - even on the PC there were GeoWorks and GEM both much better than Windows at the same time.

The W9x series finally made 32-bit computing mandatory on hardware what was capable for that for many years! Even 80286 had MMU and could have preemptive multitasking just fine but not from Microsoft OS obviously.

It was tragic than even in the Pentium1 era we were using 16-bit DOS and software were resorting to so called "extenders" to make use of 32bit mode of 386+ CPUs...

Only after NT Microsoft got a normal OS, then made it more user friendly with 2000, then even more so with XP.

The relatively ease of Windows platform is results of tremendous work what other companies were putting into it. Major advantage (and imho only one) what Windows has is 3rd party support - it has most of drivers and biggest number of apps.

The same goes for the x86 CPUs - binary compatibility with tons of software

I will not deny Microsoft/Intel business sense as their financial results speak of themselves.

MS got too big and is starting to look like a dinosaur. Problems with Vista are a prime example of that. The core issue is software (and hardware for many) got just good enough. Wintel was always operating in a mantra of "bigger, faster and louder". Now this paradigm is changing to "smaller, cheaper and quieter".

With Vista MS wants to make big possible "splash" to impress people and make them willing to spend bigger $$ once again. But there isn't much left space to be impressed for.

I'm curious - will Vista have finally an improved installer at least? Or it will be the same cumbersome medieval thing like its now?

The same goes for Intel. We have now profesional quality soft synths and effects in the VST form. We have cheap storage, cheap audio interfaces, very good latency, capability to runs tens of VSTs and even some tricks like a freeze.

Once the XT2 will show I will have to boot Win only for one program. It has version for Linux already but is working corectly only on the RedHatEnterprise unfortunately.

if you're on a laptop (or desktop for that matter..) using the ATI R200M IGP.. you're in for some hassles.. at least in my experiences with 5.10 or 6.06 (64bit beta)

also setting up a broadcom wireless adapter in 5.10 was another big hassle.. having to resort to ndiswrapper and using a windows driver.. unsure if this has been supported out of the box in 6.06 but I highly doubt it.

oh and for the record.. hydrogen has been ported to windows o/s.. its a bit crash prone atm but its there..

Yea the new Ubuntu/Kubuntu Dapper Drake is really great and easy to install, much more than with the previous installer.

Now you have a *graphical* installer, like a live-cd thing, you can even surf Kvr or any irc chan while installing : ) (really).

You'll hear a lot about Ubuntu, and it's deserved (I'm also typing from a Kubuntu 6.06 right now).

Got to chip in and say that I use DeMuDi and have recenly installed the test version and and it performs well, but.
I had to compile new versions of a lot of music apps, rosegarden-dssi, dssi-vst and most of the dssi stuff.
And,
The kernel timing is set to 250hz and for good midi timing it should be 1000hz, this should be fixed in the next release and mabe a new kernel will be uploaded soon. The new Ubuntu Dapper has this fixed so I shall be installing that on another drive and maybe nick the kernel and install it on DeMuDi?

One thing to note is the number of Dedicated Linux music distro's that have been released over the past year or so, and more are to be released soon.

I'm also tempted to upgrade my system to 64bit so I can use 64Studio!

PS: Hydrogen DOES work on Windows. There is a windows version of one of the sound drivers that it uses, and windows binary of Hydrogen; I have had it working quite nicely.
