this is through the POD (plugged in to the exact same place). zero noise. maybe i'm just too new at VSTs to understand the problem? that, or the POD has a reeeeeeeally good noise gate.

No. It's just that the POD is designed to work with guitar signals (low level, high impedance), whereas most soundcards aren't.

i just unplug the POD and plug straight into the mixer.

You probably have an impedance mismatch somewhere.

Try: Guitar -> Good Guitar Preamp -> Sound card

It is unlikely you can plug your guitar into the mixer directly either unless it has a special 1/4" high-impedance input. You might also try a good direct box to impedance match your 1/4" guitar output into one of the XLR mic-inputs. Groove Tubes makes a good little passive DI box with decent transformers for about $39.

no mention of high impedance inputs that I could see: they might be labelled "instrument" or "Hi-Z" and you need to plug your guitar into one for it to work properly.

You need either a DI box or a pre-amp. If you can bypass the Pod's processing entirely you can probably use that..

Randy: again, even when I turn my mixer OFF, unplug it, taking my mixer and guitar completely out of the loop I still get the noise. Load up the Tube Screamer and JCM900 VSTs for yourself and see!

Its not just a noise thing: if you have passive pickups and you plug into a normal line input you are probably losing bags of tone and sustain..

Usually, regardless of DI boxes, thr results won't be as good as using a soundcard with Hi-Z inputs. I've compared the two and for me the results I'm getting right now are miles ahead of anything DI-ed (plus a quite reasonable mixer).
