Live's beat stretching / tempo guessing:
I've just this minute discovered the magic that is MixMeister BPM Analyser :D
Drag&drop tracks into its main window ans it calculates the bpm VERY accurately.
Then just turn off the "auto wap long samples" option in the "Defaults" page of preferences in Live and enter the bpm manually in the sample box.
I've dropped 10's of tracks of known bpm including some of my own and including beatless stuff and it got it right every time. Disregard the last decimal place and ur laughin.
I'm doin a mashup now right now and i wanted to sample a track for which i didn't have the bpm - it told me 104.01 so i put it in Live as 104 and its perfect. Its a long track with beats all the way thru, so I let it run its whole length and scrutinised the timing of every shot for teeny tiny indescrepencies, but nope, it's spot on.
Hope this helps - maybe this is commom knowledge and I'm looking really slooooooow right now

i dont think its common knowledge, but could you write step by step, the earlier post is a bit confusing? and thanks

Bèndybônz thanks for the tip but the link doesn't seem to be working.

Ps does it work with long songs that have a random amount of time arythmic time at the begining and end? I gessue you would still need to find the first and last beat to make it sync perfectly in Live though?

I can't wait for version 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11

Just checked that out and yeah it works. Tried it with a track of 11m06s mostly at 120 but with arhythmic bits at the start and very much so at the end, and MixMeister guessed it to its usual 1decimal place of accuracy at 120.01. then i brought it into a live project which was running at 134 and i just typed in 134 in the sample box.
It ran the whole length with the metronome and stayed bang on time. I then change the bpm of the project on the fly and checked out the ending at a few different tempos and it was still spot on.

yeah sorry bout that I was a bit hyper.

1) Go to Options>>Preferences>>Defaults>>Auto Warp long Samples. Select off
2) Drop whatever u want into MixMeister first to calculate the BPM (lets say it calculated it to 127.01bpm)
3) Then bring that sample/song into Live
4) Double click the clip to open the clip editor and u should see the SampleBox appear on the left of the ClipView. (If u don't see it u will see a box to the left of the ClipView marked "Clip" which has an on/off switch. On it there is a button marked "Keep" and under that are two buttons - one on the left which represents a waveform and one to its right with the symbol "E". Click the one that represets the waveform to display the SampleBox)
5) In the mid section of the SampleBox click "Warp" (if its not already hilighted) and this will display Live's guess of the tempo in the "Seg.BPM" box.
6) Change the "Seg.BPM" value to 127 (the one guessed by MiXMeister with a pinch of salt) and hey presto!

Sorry if this is WAY too much detail, but as I'm quite new to software I don't know what goes without saying, and I usually need things broken down this much for me when I'm learnin - so please know that i don't want to come off patronising at all.
Buds?

It would be super great if this tool had some options for updating .als and mp3 tags and the itunes database.

This makes me think of another request I'd like that I've heard before. Some type of logical system for grouping files (like using the itunes database). Hopefully this will be better when Vista comes along!

I want them to have groove files that we can create and use. That's all I need.

Oh and to fix the vst midi instrument thing. It doesn't work well with certain VSTs

Whats a groove file?
Also what problems happen with some VSTs or with what VSTs. Just so I know to avoid them. Or have you found any round about solutions for them? Do tell :)

I guess I should have said groove template.

They take the "groove" in your template and apply it to the clips you have. Currently they do this now, but only with swing.

When I use jamstix with Ableton I don't get the regular kick and snare part of the rhythm, just the accents.

What you can already do though, which is useful, is create "Warp Templates" and copy them to other clips/tracks.

To do thisall the clips need to be an identical length, so if you want to apply this technique to a full track you must first "consolidate" the audio clips in the Arrangment View. Then choose a "Reference Clip" (e.g. Hi-hats or percussion works well). Set all the warp markers for this clip and then copy it into a clip slot on each mixer track in Session View.

FOr each track you then double click on the clip to open up the waveform in the properties section of the screen. Then simply drag and drop onto the waveform display the correct audio for that track. The audio itself will be replaced... but the warp markers from the reference clip will be retained and applied to the new audio file. Once you have done this for all the tracks you will find they are all perfectly quanised to/from the same groove.

To improve Groove Quantise in Live 6 I guess that Ableton could implement the ability to save the warp markers from the reference clip as a unique groove file that could also then be used in other projects. That would be very nice.

headquest.

I don't get it.

What do you mean by set all groove clips? do you mean just turn them on, or get them in a spot where I want them to sound?

In a drum break the transients can be either before or after the perfect quantized warp markers. I want to copy these transient locations and apply them to another clip..midi or audio.

Is this what you are explaining? I only know that if I enable all the warp markers and move them closer to the transients, then the groove starts to go away on the specific clip I'm working with.

I'm probably to tired this morning to understand what you saying:)

Thanks headquest, that's genius :D
