What new host of inventions of imagination could now compare to the first time you installed a sequencer and discovered vsti and rewire, and explored Reaktor ?

We have reached a climax, and theres only one way to go, or is there?

I agree with bugs. I had that same religious feeling the first time I turned on my Portastudio, the first time I bought (could afford) a large diaphragm condenser mic and plugged it in, the first time I watched the motorized faders flying up and down on my digital mixer, the first time I fired up Fruityloops and realized I could use ANY sound as a drum sound, the first time I took a laptop to a park and multitracked while sitting under a tree...
The best is yet to come. It's beyond my imagination I think, but not beyond the imagination of some very smart kid out there somewhere.

the climax is well over mates - a little thought on the subject and you discover, that NOW when we have lots of gigs of cpu power + lots of gigs of ram + super hosts and all kinds of vsts hasnt changed lot or?
its all in the head...
the purpose of nowadays newest host and vsts, is to simplify things a lot. now give it a thought - it means, that when we had only hardware (read limited rescourses) ppl made derrific music and tunes, but there were less ppl, cuz others didnt have the will power to experiment. now that we have everything sitting in our cpu, more and more ppl will do music, but it means more and more shiti music to... when you have a talent you pursue it, no matter what tools are available, humans are inventive as long as there is a need to invent...
maybe the purpose of new hosts, vsts, .ens is to give talented ppl tools, and nontalented to be fetishists and copy theyr favourite artists...
we actualy dont need so mutch simplissity, belive me...
...the future is very near = you as the user will push "new song" button, then the cpu makes a new song depending on the genere you choose bpm and so on... the only thing you have to do is listen to your brand new song! or is it already mutch different when you open ensembles and tweak a few knobs in reaktor?
all this = more and more "kind of ok sounding music" but not more briliant music than we would have without so mutch resources...
and ppl please give me a song that uses 3gigs of cpu + 4gigs of ram!!! whats the point in that?

Uh, sorry, mate. Don't agree with that. I hear tons of new, great music everyday - and there will always be "OK" music (especially as that is subjective!), nothing to be done there.

As for a song that "uses 3gigs of cpu"...WTF cares if it sounds good???

Production is more accessible today - but this isn't necessarily because things are "simplified". Youre talking about lack of "will power to experiment". What about lack of money? How many gifted musicians have we missed because they didn't have the means to pursue their talent. What music was lost because it wasn't recorded? Does it mean a lot more shitty music too? sure. But does it matter? Who cares what shit they wrote in the 19th century? Beethoven is what counts.

You also ignore the most important aspect of innovation: it opens up new possibilities. New sonic options and strange, new ways to perform will give birth to new kinds of music. You'll still need talent, for sure. But there will be a lot more you could do with your given talent.

For example, in their time vsti and rewire were unlimited in what it offered the computer musician.

Name a comparable concept since then?

I can think of synful? which was a very inventive concept, but what else.

It seems to me it consolidation time, this seems to come after a burst of inventive energy.

vst exited me at first. but, the thrill is gone. however, it's now easier to get the music done. the software is second nature. i can't think of anything i can't do with all the freeware i have. i've done a bunch of music just because i could and not because i was inspired. i have more than i need. this is a far cry from the days of layering casios. however, that too gave me a euphoric feeling when i first started

Your thinking is kind of...narrow. For me, rewire is, so what? I wouldn't describe it as a mind blowing invention. It's a work-around to a problem, and it just happens to float your boat. I don't think it will be remembered along with analog tape, the electric guitar, synthesis, multitracking, and digital sequencing and recording as an apex in recording history.
I can't name a comparable concept, because if I could think of it, I would implement it, and I would be rich right now. Someone will invent, I don't know... a new way to interface with instruments, an open format system for recording and sequencing without using computers... who knows?

Maybe we are in a "refining" stage right now, maybe you are impatient for the next big thing, maybe you won't live long enough to see it, but I think your age is showing. Either old enough to be jaded, or young enough to imagine you've seen it all.

You need to adopt a more Tantric approach. Its the journey that's important; the occasional spurts of pleasure along the way are of course also a joy but if we focus too much on those and allow all our energies and expectations to ride on those relatively brief and often forgetable moments rather than enjoying and savouring the sensuality and richness of the whole ride we end up becoming endlessly unfulfilled, restless and burnt out.
