Professional Soundfonts

I've looked through the big sample list and it's great and all, but I'm looking for some good professional (semi-affordable) soundfont banks, the best place I've found is Sonic Implants... but, I'm looking to broaden my selection a bit and I can't seem to find any decent sources of professional soundfonts... I have yet to browse the many, many free ones, it just seems like quality would be hard to find.

I'm looking for pretty much anything except sampled synths, so like drums, instruments (some nice ethnical instruments would be great, oriental, tribal, etc.) Pretty much anything to add to my arsenal of instruments.

I can't afford to shell out $400-500 for Kontakt or Giga, etc. so it would seem like soundfonts are my best bet, then again I'm new to the game and I could be wrong!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Theres nothing better as SF2 out there than SONIC IMPLANTS!
I have them all hehehe!

You may try my drums in the SFz format!
HALion, Kontakt, REASON, SFz, Dr008, etc...

But you should move up by getting a Player!
HALion Player is cheap!
HALion 2 can be found on Ebay for $50..., last time I saw it!

Also! most SF2 libraries at Sonic Implants are now multi format!
(M-AUDIO PREMIUM SERIES)
You can buy the libraries and use the HAlion player $99.00
Also HAlion Player comes with the HALion 3 library.

SampleSmith has a great acoustic guitar for a mere 10$ in soundfont format

PMI has similarly priced, cut down versions of their pianos in sf2 format. I own Old Lady by them (full version) and I'm sure the soundfonts are well worth the asked prcied, though I haven't checked them yet.

You can still get Ultimate Bass Kit (comes in either Wusik or sf2) for 15$ - at the Manytone group buy. Beautiful and detailed Electric Bass .The Wusik format contains additional presets, so get it if you can. Though the basic sounds are worth at least thrice the asked price).

Speaking of WusikStation - with disk streaming coming in version 3 and an ever growing library of sounds, it is shaping to be an affordable sample playing solution - if you don't mind using ready-made libraries or building your own in an external program. Coupled with Extreme Sample Converter (which is offered at a discount for Wusik users), you have quite a powerful solution for your sample playing needs.

Sonic Implants is the best for commercial soundfonts by far. For a huge selection of free ones check out www.sf2midi.com Note that some of these may have missing copyright info, unfortunately, and there are a few that shouldn't be there because of that reason. For reviews of free ones (to save a lot of wasted bandwidth) check out this Japanese site musf.ifdef.jp/sf/Todays_Sound_Font.html You will need to use a translation like babel fish unless you read Japanese. This guy knows his stuff.

Don't own any of zvon commercial samplesets, but from the demos and freebies I can tell it's quality and nicely priced.

I've been doing the same thing you have, searching for free soundfont files anywhere I could find them, like the sites allready mentioned. After downloading over 200 or more soundfonts from here and there, I've found only about 5 percent truly outstanding, the best in my collection being:

jRhodes3.sf2 (LearJeff's JRhodes elect piano)
ns_kit7free.sf2 (free Natural Studio free drum kit)
and a variety like:

While the above are great, it's hardly a full collection. Soundfonts are too limited in availability (the great sounds). So, I stopped searching for soundfonts and instead am planning to purchase one of the major sample collections like Giga, SampleTank, or Kontakt 2. I also might later get a synth rack like the Motif ES. But I've decided to go with soft samplers first.

If Kontact is too expensive, be sure check out their smaller player, Kompakt, with a large collection of sounds, including ethnic. (next post). Kompakt is the smaller player of Kontakt, and is only $159.95 at:

Wow, definately a huge collection of sounds for a great price there...

I've been experimenting with VSampler lately, but I had only heard a little about Kompakt so I didn't really even know what it was (I failed to do any research in NI after seeing their other prices).

Now I'm kind of torn because VSampler can open all of the major formats, but Kompakt has that nice starting sound package!

EDIT: Ah. It would seem Kompakt can to do all that, too.

Many of the libraries from www.precisionsound.net are available as soundfonts (or in sfz format which can be played with the freeware sfz player from www.rgcaudio.com ).
