Id also look at Vectrik (infact any of the CoFX synths) and the Disco DSP synths.
Edit- dont forget Manystation, I think its normally $99 but it half price at the moment only $50 which is a major bargain!

Intriguing thread. I find it hard to choose 5, because I happen to really really like stuff like Peti (NUSofting), MrRay, and also like HG Fortune and AlgoMusic's synths a lot. Wusik is IMHO not an 'under $100' synth, since most owners end up spending $200-$400 getting all the add-on soundsets, paying for the pre-orders, the magazine, etc. On the other hand, all my recent purchases have been over $100 and the single most-used synth here is LL3 (now to be superceded by Scarbee, after his birthday
).
The top 5?
NuBi-LE
ImpOSCar
HGFortune (any of them)
Manystation / Wusikstation
Modelonia

For around $100 you could order Jack Dark's Novuzeit instruments, Psychic Modulation's synth pack, Benedict's SSP package, and Ugo's metallurgy. You would have an amazing collection of instruments, effects and drum machines that do really interesting and unusual things. The package from EVM synths is worth looking at, too.

Excluding samplers, all of mine would be free or donationware:
KarmaFX Synth
xhip
Foorius
ZynAddSubFX
Nubi
Even if I were to expand, they would all continue to be free or donationware:
farbrausch v2
Asynth
Augur
Grainz
Mr Ray 73
Miles'tone
Mr Tramp
Surface
Voyager
Buffer Synth 2
If I were to throw in samplers, Liveslice would sit at the top of the list. I'm excluding massive host-like synths/synth-like hosts/developing doo-dads such as Audiomulch, Bidule, pd, Csound, Synthedit, Synthmaker.
I'd throw in DR008 if I had a license for it, since it is the bee's knees for what it does, but I never got around to getting it. Rhino's just over $100, so it just misses the list.

Exciton2's as good as any mentioned despite it's age. That's one of the best sounding VSTi's I've ever used.
