Oh definitely, but most samplers I use don't have that support. Sampletank, DFHS, Virtual Guitarist, Wusik, ... Some of them have some sort of compression (and/or light versions of huge sample sets) which helps to keep RAM usage down. But again, my main issue is that I run out of memory from *changing* samples.spacefox wrote: An efficient workaround would be disk streaming your samples, no?
Why is everyone so obsessed with plugin CPU consumption?

Hmmm, well I am not quite the musician to be touring, so that never crossed my mindSascha Franck wrote:Well, I have a very small, extra-slim Edirol PCR-M1, which offers at least 24 (standard sized, half action height) keys. And whenever I need to, I can just connect another keyboard.
Besides, I'm a guitar player, so I concentrate on getting some guitar ideas captured when being on the road.
I am also a guitar player and that would seem like the best solution for getting ideas down while you're out and about, hell I can never get any ideas recording and my PC is always within 20 feet of me, haha... Dammit.
But, yes. If I were 'on the road' I would definately have a laptop handy at all times! Hell no I'm not lugging my PC around
My AMD Sempron 3000+ does alright... I usually run at 1.6GHz, that is until (rather if I ever) fix my cooling situation... tends to overheat at 2GHz unless I take the side of the case off (I don't have nearly enough airflow in that case!) which doesn't bother me all that much 'cause I could care less how the thing looksSascha Franck wrote:The low power of my 1.86GHz Pentium M is getting annoying though. It also doesn't feel as snappy as my old desktop.

I know. Was just being mean.Subfix wrote: Hey, I said "I suppose..." and "I don't know much about the subject".
I stand corrected, although I didn't think that the multiple DVDs worth of content would be loaded at the same time...
Nope, probably wouldnt. But its also an indication that a coupla hundred Mb is a bit naive, since you could easily expect that a single instrument out of a set, like piano, or a set of cello articulations is all gonna be loaded at the same time...

if you consume every single cycle of yer processor power there is no "jitter" introduced from other time slices used to process winders processes.whyterabbyt wrote:what utter shite.VanLichten wrote:Simple answer:

Well yes, but if you're writing music for an orchestra, you need the orchestra loaded. So you will have multiple articulations for violins, violas, cellos, piano, percusion, brass, flutes, oboes, clarinets and so on. Unless you do very small pieces, orchestral stuff is very resource instensive.Subfix wrote:and as far at the orchestral ones, I always assumed they were broken down a bit by section/instrument and not everything in one big lump.
Don't forget it's not like you just need to load one violin multisample to handle your violin line. You may need 7 or 8 different articulations (effectively, different versions of multisamples with differeing characteristics).
So yes, you could well be loading a huge portion of that multiple DVD library into RAM (like I said, streaming helps, but again, there are limits to disk throughput etc)

cpu consumption is an issue for me. 2.6 ghz here. it takes a long time to freeze. i can't work with the frozen track(s). if there's more than one, i have to refreeze to thaw out the one i need to tweak. i constantly tweak tracks. i even tweak after i've uploaded a track to the auditorium. just tryin to make it as good as it can be

I have great respect for people doing symphonic rock. How the hell do they fit drums, guitars, bass, piano AND a huge foppin orchestra into RAM. They must have a very clever workflow those guys...

A) They may still use the occasional real instrument (especially guitars and drums, probably also basses).pekadan wrote:I have great respect for people doing symphonic rock. B) Diskstreaming. All the most popular libaries come in one or the other format to allow for diskstreaming. Using a separated controller, along with some separated physical drive(s) surely helps a lot!
