Wow thanks for the great responses. I appreciate that I wasn't laughed at for asking this question :)

The responses are starting to make me realize that I really was attached to the sound of something swelling to full volume more than anything and it's kind of making me re-evaluate my arrangement standards if i'm so infatuated with this sort of technique. That would be a different matter all together but there were some great suggestions here about replacing the reverse cymbal specifically.

What are "Spectral Relativity IMPULSES"
I checked out the company website that makes them but didn't have enough time to really figure out what they were.

Don't forget silence (+ huge following break/crash)

something like:

Code: Select all

¤(")#.!"#
^-silent bit with just reverb tails fading out...
I hear it in commercialz anytimez

reverse vocal
cymbal crescendo
reverse horn blast
reverse guitar chord
low pass filter with 50% res slowly opening on a white noise oscillator

There are also other ways, like a bassdrum with a long reverb that lasts for 2 measures, and on beat 7 and 8, you can have a snare roll (on 16ths), or you can have a bassdrum with reverb lasting for 1 measure, and then a reverse bassdrum setting in on the last 8th of the 4th beat.
I think this two-step scenario can be variated in so many ways.. I remember some Eurodisco from the 90s where they were using whip-isp sounds purely made with a sine where the pitch was changed very fast through many octaves, and then had a bassdrum added to it.
Hmm, I think that was ICE MC - it's a rainy day.
Best Regards
