As per the topic,
I'm in the market for the best sequencer that has great tools to work with video and visual media.
What is there out there? Why should I use it? What price range am I looking at?

Features like tempo mapping/calculation from measures, SMPTE time-stamping and good video scrubbing/streaming facilities are a must, what else should I look out for?

Cheers!

Vegas seems perfect

are you on cracK?

Vegas is an audio/video sequencer, but AFAIK has no midi support.

I'm using Cubase SX for my (very occasional) scoring needs. The question was not "how to edit video" but "how to score video" - so I recon the video itself is finished. Having one video play along is no problem in cubase sx.

Protools/Avid. Video works better in a video editor. There's Nuendo if you have a lot of money or Symphony or Media Composer if you have a lot more. A lot of stuff you might want to swap around. A copy of After Effects or Combustion might help.

It's not cheap but "the best" rarely is. I'd not even consider anything other than Avid for your editor. Protools has the best compatability. Others will work to varying degrees. Sonar's pretty good, Cubase... they all have the basics.

I've used Sonar in combination with FCP (obviously not on the same machine).
The video I'm scoring now (well, sort of "now" anyway) was made in AE, though.

I use sonar and ACID. ACID is by far the easiest program to line up hits points and musical beats with. Unfortunately for ACID, SONAR is a far more elegant midi sequencer.

A lot of the big film composers use Logic, Cubase/Nuendo, Digital Performer or Sonar to score to video. I wouldn't recommend Pro Tools for writing music to picture - the program is too clunky with midi(it feels like they duct taped midi onto this amazing audio program they have). Vegas is a good program for people who work with audio cause it treats video editing similar to an audio sequencer, which I guess is cause of their involvement with the Acid program.

But i'd only recommend something like Vegas for doing tasks such as adding a timecode stamp, chopping up clips for your demo reel, adding credits, making your own music video etc. You could also use Vegas as a sound editor tool similar to Pro Tools, and interestingly enough Vegas can also mix in 5.1 for you! But for the actual scoring process the first set of sequencers is where you should be looking to.

One of the great benefits about vegas for video is that the audio is indeed quite awesome

Unlike Conservatory Kids apps such as pro tools, you can actually see the waveforms in events as you move them around. This is CRITICAL for proper placement. Newer versions of nuendo can do this as well, but vegas really does fly editing wise

Also fx and transitions in vegas are ALL, every one, each, always, realtime, drag it in or call it up its already there, unlike so many other video editing apps where you gotta wait for it to render or prerender to even try it

vegas rules as a video editor

What's a Conservatory Kids app? Pro Tools does scrub video while you drag audio events around - i'm wondering why you think it doesn't? :?:

Does anyone know of any good tutorials or more info on this floating around on the net (Logic specific)?

There's a whole breed of audio tutorial video companies popping up. I'm sure many people here know the different companies but I've seen this one called Ask Video around;

I'm not sure how many tutorials will focus on film music specifically - in general when they discuss film music they teach you how to generate music notation for an orchestra using these programs but rarely do you get some serious hitpoint training. I guess that goes to show you how much you have to teach yourself these days.
