What's a Conservatory Kids app? Pro Tools does scrub video while you drag audio events around - i'm wondering why you think it doesn't? :?:
Sorry it wasnt clear enough

When you move audio events around in PT you dont see the waveforms inside them till you release them to their new position

Conservatory Kids are poul souls who pay good money to go to a school so that mix magazine can sell them to advertisers. Upon graduation they take their direct marketed misdirections to studios and then try and convince the older engineers who know better to sell all their good gear and buy computer apps from digidesign originally made for editing keyboard sounds, whos waveforms dont display as you drag them around the screen.

That's quite a twisted nickname you have thought up for people who use Pro Tools man! Wow. It doesn't matter that the waveforms don't display while dragging cause you can drop a Sync Point onto the waveform. Anyways that is so inconsequential to me that I didn't even notice that the waveforms don't display while dragging until you just brought it up, but it DOES scrub video while dragging which is great.

actually it does matter, i dont believe pro tools doesnt have this basic functionality.

It matters a LOT!

Well actually it matters a whole hell of a lot, but depending on exactly what youre doing

I can see situations where it wouldnt matter so terribly much

But for the kind of work we do here, recording and mixing albums its of utmost importance

We have our HD system, we have our Alsihad Jedi around as well, but I can teach an intern to clean up tom tracks for instance, in vegas in about 15 monutes and they will SMOKE the Alsihah at this function. Its just how different the editing system is and how its tailored

This is no knock, and not really a matter of opinion, just testable hypothesis which has been done time and time again. The truth is, if the waveforms displayed while moving I would have probably been using PT and only PT for a very long time, but as it sits now, I cant and have never seen or heard of, anyone else, who can get editing (of the type we do most) done in a reasonable time in PT

I was just browsing the PRo tools forums today, and omg, those people are talking about things that are 100K-1M dollars as if they were 10 bucks a pop.

One guy goes "I have an ssl for sale. Pm me. 100K".

If it mattered so much then how come the best post-audio for film facilities run pro tools? Obviously they don't care for this feature that much! Not saying that what the best post facilities care about are what matters to you and pipeline per se, they work differently, but it goes to show you that seeing a waveform while you drag isn't the be-all and end-all of DAW editing.

Not only can you use sync points but if you use the Nudge function in small increments you can see the waveform while you move it around with your key commands. Try it out!

Yes there's quite an elitist nature to the program sometimes! LE users are sort of seen as tiny ants in the big picture.

As a long time Protools and Vegas user, I can only say that this feature would be a welcome addition in Protools.

It is by no means critical to me, because I mostly design and mix to film. There even in Vegas you'd probably never get a synching picture on the point your mouse pointer touches the waveform. Now that would be an innovation for me. In the meantime the sync point is deadly accurate, even though not quite as fast on constrained edits.

The moving waveform could be part of it all though. It does seem a bit ridiculous not to have it. Perhaps you should suggest it in the DUC. It's just one in a strand of many missing features in Protools however.
Will mix for fun

It's what they bought into years ago is why they use it. That and Avid buying it.
Protools bought up any serious competition and bought out magazines and used the best marketing.
Nuendo came out all buggy.
Thank goodness I don't have to use it at home. (what a pig!)

The schoolboys all love it because thats what they were taught.

PT is pretty recent to post and theres a LOT of other stuff that has been used traditionally and still is. But its also a case of foxes guarding the henhouse, letting a company dictate your workflow through an extreme marketing system.

Also inmates running the assylum with the plethora of Conservatory kids running around

So many see Full Snail and such as an alternative to the dreaded mop bucket, but the truth is, the mop bucket and coffee maker will teach you so much more abpout adui than the schools ever will, its just a matter of paying attention.

Im aware of the nudge, but this is like cubendo or logic stuff, not too fun or fast. Although it does work

Well anyways looking back on this thread I have no clue why I gave two craps about defending the dragging region issue in Pro Tools. You're right it sucks!

And I'd have to admit being a borderline conservatory kid. I went to a great audio college but some of my classmates walked out of there only knowing how to use pro tools and only will know how to use just that for years to come. But since most of those folks will just be doing post production sound and not music scores it's actually a very fitting program for them to know.

Garageband/Logic & iMovie or MediaEdit Pro.

Logic + Mackie Control Universal makes this a breeze!

I think Vegas is great, but it's not that cheap.
Right now I seriously have to produce a video. :)

For me there are two possibilities (not sure if these were mentioned here):

Doing the scoring with the FL Studio Video Editor inside FL Studio or using Audition (it's good for audio, but not for midi)
Symphony Nr.1
Meet the Cities Repair Team Unimportant laughter
music has become meaningless...we just keep doing it

Post

probably the main reason people use pro tools at all is because it's a industry standard. They dont let an essential feature missing stop them ;)
