Just curious, what would be the value to Image Line?

Not saying I'm all for or against open beta systems, but isn't that simply a matter of what the developer thinks is the best way to control on the one hand the spreading of beta-releases and getting as much useful feedback as possible on the other hand?

With the user-base FL has I can see this approach being a reasonably efficient one for IL.

I don't really want FL Studio - however if they added this to the Juice pack I would probably get it, already tempted by Edison

My answer: Good marketing. It shows they are open to people's feedback that don't actually own the product, but are interested. Feeling that they have input on what is coming up could sway a perspective buyer.

But image-line could never pull it off because they don't have an open forum. They'd have to be willing to take the good with the bad, and I don't think they are ready for it. Ableton beta forum is open to whomever. You get some morons, but mostly its people that want to make the product better and see if they want to upgrade/buy the new version.

I see your point on user base, but I also see that as a bit "in bred" because they don't get feedback from people that use different hosts.

It's just one click (well 4 actually) to open up the forums but it just
doesn't work. We tried it a couple of years ago but were swamped with
warez users pretending to be customers and wanting support.

This made it completely impossible to offer support to our actual
(paying) customers. To most people software doesn't really hold a
value these days (as they have warez versions of virtually all host
installed) so we can only hope to convince them to pay for the
support, video tutorials, samples, ...

Anyway : With the amount of registered users we currently have I'm
sure we cover enough ground to allow closed betatesting.

I just meant a beta forum that was only open for the duration of the beta. It would remain open to all during the beta, but once the beta was over, the forum is locked up. The way you guys have setup your forums, I could see where it would be a daunting task, and I don't think you have the resources that Ableton or Props do, so I can see where it would be impossible for you guys to manage. Hopefully someday it will be easier for non-reg's to participate.
