The Andrew Duke--Consumer vs. User remix contest is now officially "live" on http://andrew-duke.com and http://stratagem-musik.com and running until August 31, 2006. The best resulting remixes will be released on Stratagem Musik and 16 great prizes are up for grabs including software, magazine subscriptions, books, CDs-ROMs, and CDs.

Even if you decide not to enter the contest, there are 385 WAV samples (available as 24bit and 16bit) from my Consumer vs. User album (http://www.phthalo.com/cat.php?cat=phth40) available for free download on http://andrew-duke.com as well as a full preview of the album's lead track.

I do hope, though, that some of you music-makers here will enter the contest. And please spread the word to any producers and composers and sound designers you think might be interested in entering the contest and in playing with the samples.

Thanks.
Take care.
Andrew

Can you share with us the judging criteria? Would you say that remixes that only use the samples in the pack have a much better chance of winning?

What are people allowed to do with the samples if they don't enter? Can they use them in their own songs?

re: judging criteria: we're looking for production quality and "vibe"; I wouldn't say that remixes that use only samples in the pack have a better chance of winning, just that for me a remix has the "vibe" of the source material--so if I listen to a track that has absolutely no "vibe" in common with the samples and just sounds like a song with a sample or two slapped on top for the sake of it it won't be as good as a song that imaginatively uses the samples--with or without using other things--and comes up with a new thing with a "vibe" that makes sense.

Producers can make their own songs with the samples if they don't enter, I'd just like to hear what producers come up with, same as with other free samples I've made available.

Ok great. I don't usually enter contests but i'm going to whittle away at this one this summer cause it's interesting. I also like how you've given everyone a fair amount of time to put something together. Good luck to everyone entering. Here's to Reaktor!

mnml.nl put together a contest with some of my samples earlier this year, but there wasn't a lot of time before the entries were due, so we decided this time to give people a good 10 weeks.

I'm not much of a remixer and won't likely enter (though you never know), but good on ya for arranging such a thing, and big up to the companies that have furnished the winnings!

Thanks, Lunch Money. You can, however, download and use the samples without entering the remix competition.
