Yes you are right. That's why I was so happy with the "tape style monitoring" in Logic.Isn't the "tape mode" monitoring a hold-over from days when you didn't have unlimited tracks, slip-editing and couldn't move date around from track to track easily?
No, that's not the way I work. I use all 24 outputs from PC to my 32 tr. Yamaha O2R, mix them with outboard equipment. The headphone monitor mix comes from the O2R channels.And with a multiple out soundcard, you'd monitor over one output (to headphones) and send your main mix out another, so the idea of hearing the vocal in the control room all the time seems unlikely.
Of course I will try Sonar again, but with paying clients it's always hard to run into difficulties. So then I'm into Logic again.
The "tape style monitoring" works very well in Samplitude, but the midi is not as good (yet?) as in Sonar/Logic.
