Hi there. I am looking to migrate my second system to a linux distro for audio work and some programming. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in this and can recommend a good linux distribution for maiinly audio. I was thinking of trying mandriva 2006, fedora core5, ubuntu or Suse 10.1 . Any help much appreciated.

PS: if this is in the wrong thread, sorry as didnt know where else this fits.
PS2: also any recommendation on audio apps for linux much appreciated (from hosts, to synths to effects ...)..

My vote goes to Debian for a Linux distribution in general, although Unix and audio don't mix IMO.

Is much as I like Linux, I wouldn't say it's exactly geared towards audio work. I keep meaning to try Rosegarden, but I can't see myself abandoning FL Studio for it. FL and the plethora of free synths (Minimogue VA, polyIblit et al) are all that are keeping me on Windows.

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

Lots of information there, I'm just getting to know a standard Ubuntu installation, so this http://ubuntustudio.com/wiki/index.php/ ... sicians%21 looks interesting to me.

Ubuntu was a breeze to install and seems to be running very well indeed.

Best of luck.

Nice stk inspired text here...http://17hex.net/wp-content/Linux-VSTI-synopsis.txt which might be some use, and http://www.dynebolic.org/ and http://agnula.org/ are both pretty interesting, can run both from cd or install.

thanks for the quick replies all :) seems that i will try ubuntu today as i already donwloaded yesterday the latest distro and follow with others. however i am relative a newbie in the linux world and though having a main distro like mandriva or suse would be easier as there is more support. however i do intend to use this system for programming and database dev and dont know if the specific audio distros u have recommended are adequate for this. dunno, they are silly question but nontheless will try em one by one :)
any other recommendations much appreciated. i am more into a midi sequencer and audio editor softwares, kinda like FL and cubase/protools on windows but on linux am blue. either way. will have the system hopefully tonight ready with ubuntu and i'll post thoughts.

thanks

edit-------

also anyone aware if any of these distro support a maudio firewire 1814 interface? or will i need to use the onboard sound of my sys? thanks

i think there is no support for 1394 devices in linux yet...but someone started working on providing it in 2004...

but that is old news...and alsa project might have advanced...

Just installed the Ubuntustudio using the instruction from this site http://ubuntustudio.com/wiki/index.php/ ... sicians%21

Everything went as smooth as silk, I now have a working Linux audio setup running on ubuntu dapper. I didn't bother with the low latency kernal patch, but I'm still getting pretty good latency on my Terratec ewx24/96.

I'm impressed.

There's the FreeBoB project, which lives here: http://freebob.sourceforge.net
Here's a list of supported devices.

Yup seconded, Fedora core CCRMA, especially if you have an RME card

my advice:
PCLinuxOS
http://pclinuxos.com
not exactly audio, but all audio soft for linux available via synaptic, and its the most intelligent and easy to use distribution, with perfect support.

Post

Where on the PCLinuxOS site does it say which version of ALSA they're running? (My Mia isn't well supported... :( and I'm bored of downloading CDs only to find they don't have the driver.)

dude, heres what someone answer in the forum:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=6853.0

is 1.0.11, the latest stable
im on work cant tell you nothing more, and i rely on the dude in the forum:)

...but i think and hope it will work, give it a try

I wouldn't recommend an out-of-the-box desktop distro unless you're ready to get your hands dirty.
The kernels usually aren't ready for realtime operations. You can make your own kernel, of course, but this takes some work and experience.
The easiest option for audio is to use a specialist distro, such as one from the list on the UbuntuStudio wiki.
