Can Cubase SX-3 work with Mackie mdr 24/96??

I was wondering since I still have an mdr 24/96 if somehow sx3 could communicate with it maybe even use the mdr as a slave where the sx-3 controls the record, play foward, rewind features. That would sure save disk space, issues with memory, latency not to mention more bandwidth I guess. Any way I can do this?
