Does Syntendo sound like a NES?

When patched as such, yes!

This is -not- a NOVUZEIT release.

Image
(not to scale...)

I made a mono synthesizer called Syntendo.

It attempts to emulate the sound of the 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System using non-emulated methods (read dirty shortcuts).

Things very NES alike:

Square/Square/Triangle/Noise w/ ADSR
Master Pitch per channel
Frequency Sweeping per channel
Master On/Off + Volume control per channel

Things not so NES alike:

Pitch Modulation
Step Sequence Arp per channel
Quantization per channel
Downsample per channel
Micro-Burst-Feedback Delay/Distortion (just try the thing) per channel

Global Bit Reduction
Global Clipping
Global Volume Control

No user manual included at this time (might write one if necessary, but come on this is a VERY simple synth folks). BUT, each control is tool-tipped.

Includes a bunch of presets, some sound like a NES to me, others are intentionally insane-esque because I just can't help myself.

If you like Syntendo please leave me thoughts as such.

If you don't like it please spare my nuts. It's free! This is the first bit of freeware I've released in 6 months.

Just click right here to download Syntendo.

Wish I had this Wednesday when I did my Shadowgate tune. :hihi:

I loved Shadowgate. I got it for Christmas back in '89. That game scared the crap out of me back then... it still has excellent atmosphere. The only NES game that outdoes it in the frightening meme department I'd say is Sweet Home. I had to actually order a walkthrough when I was a kid to beat Shadowgate... but, come on, I was like 10! Yes, I agree, Shadowgate had FANTASTIC music, still does. So does Deja Vu.

Post

Thanks Jack! I look forward to playing with this. I'm sure it will bring back fond memories of a mispent youth. :hihi:

I hope so, fond that is. I'm sure plenty will say "it doesn't sound like a NES". It does to me though, when patched as such.

I know Mr. Herr_Prof is going to scalp my ego quickly.

Yes, but no so directly. :p

Programming a real NES' sound system in the 80's must of been insane... from what I've read.

Anyway, I'll probably do one more patchset for Syntendo that focuses entirely on sounding like a NES. Maybe thursday night or something.

You guys let me know if you think it sounds like a NES at all, 'K?

Post

i'm loving this, jack :)

i also love theif the dark project! what did you think about the sequels?

also, can you do me a favor? Can you list your top 5 PC games of ALL TIME, and also, your top 5 CONSOLE games of all time? (Any console). you have good taste :)

great synth, too

EDIT:

Oh no, unlike NEORETRO and some of your older Darkware plugins, you did not label the parameters, making it very hard to control by midi!

Thanx for calling this Syntendo...it needed to be done. To heck with Wii, I'm playin' Syntendo. And yes, it does sound like an NES when played as such.
