I'm just adding my very limited experience here: I've experimented with the AGNULA distro ( http://agnula.org/ ). Installation was less easy than Ubuntu for example (note I'm a total Linux noob

) but with a little help from a friend everything went fine. The interresting point is that with my audiophile2496 I could easily go to <5ms latency when playing with ZynAddSubFX straight out of the box. The included Rosegarden version was buggy. Note that if you boot with a MIDI controller connected JACK wont start properly.

try Apodio - that's the only distro I came across so far (and I tested a lot) which works properly in regard to Alsa - that's because it has a config tool (and it's an x-application) that offers you to list all available drivers and to force the switching to one of them.

And that's needed because Alsa-Config itself just doesn't recognize the Mia (and I assume it's the same problem with other pro soundcards).

So cofiguring Apodio for using the Mia is a breeze while all other audio-distros fail (whereas they support all the common consumer cards

).

i have experience with ccrma, agnula, apodio, ubuntu with ubuntu-studio, musix, dyne:bolic, and tons of other derivates, all these "audio" distros are unpolished and not user friendly, pclinuxos EVOLVES mandriva, the most user friendly distro, fits on live cd with possible instalation, and when you customise it you can do your own live cd with your tracks, software you use etc - what more? the latency of kernel is perfect for me, runs smooth and stabble, no buggy software, and great update and support, and its easy - give it a try.
and ubuntu is gey

Keep your config files. It's not a big deal to compile alsa.

Personally, I'd just go ahead and set up apt and connect to the Planet CCRMA {as well as the several other rpm based} archives. There's not a lot of sense in spending your time installing distributions. ...Especially if you've already got the basic system set up and working.

I have been using musix,

that is a very nice working one, it runs from a live-cd or can be installed. It includes most of the music software is available and usefull for linux. If you like linux, but dont want to be compiling or setting up so much, can be a good thing.

here's a nod towards Musix from me. 's a good one.

also JackLap is wicked. It uses OpenSuse 10 and 10.1, easily one of the best distros ever.

Search for a Linux distro for audio work ???
