So... what the heck can I use this for?

I created these random... reverb-saturdated, destructed, randomly routed synthesized samples and then sampled them and sampled them again. Does anyone know what I could use this weird junk for?

Here's a clip of the 2 "atmospheres" I created doing this. http://www.elanhickler.com/d/atmos.mp3 You will hear one clip, then i switch to the next.

One very interesting thing I noticed doing this though is that if I send these samples through reverb (specifically RaySpace) the signal sounds MORE MONO, very strange. As if I created something that goes way beyond normal stereo. :P

Use 'em? I think you already are. You've got the making of a pretty nice ambient track there. Or a soundtrack. Or put some crunchy beats under them and I'll buy it. I dig.

It's really easy to create this junk. Just load up a synth, select a patch, hit a few random notes, sustain them, add effects, add reverb, add more effects, add more reverb, sample, play the sample sustained with cross-fade loop mode at a few different pitches at the same time, record 60 seconds, you're done! It helps to have some filtered white noise somewhere in the mix, but sometimes you don't want white noise. Oh yeah and something to stereoize the output is good, adjust till you hear the perfect amount of stereo. And be sure to use sound sources that already have lots of stereo.

Try milli_vinylli for good noise

here's another few atmos I created. 12 seconds each of 3 60 second recordings: http://www.elanhickler.com/d/atmos2.mp3

Also, random beeping is also good somewhere in the mix. I also tend to add like 4+ graphic equalizers and make spikes in the EQ to make noisy sinus-like drones.

edit: oh yeah and combining semi-dry drones in a sampler also works well.

You might compile a midi file with all of your favorite beats/melodies/etc to go along with it. It's a fast way to dump variants. Add a delay and you can get variants of variants. :)

{Of course, then you have to organize them.}

Whaaaaaaa.... what are you talking about RTaylor? I mean I guess it's a good tip to create a database of grooves and melodies... but... ??? what does this have to do with the subject?

Oooh I just created a really nice one! Instead of going full wet, I let a tiny bit of (ONE) of the original sound through (adding some dry signal).

Here, I'll give you the full 60 seconds in mp3 format.

Do any of you want the wav format? 10megs.

I said I wanted teh m :))

Speed up the jumpcuts tenfold with a few swells to link them and you've got a hell of a track there, I reckon.

I love the third one... like being in a really huge space surrounded by ominous alien machinery, or somehting.

(I made some of this type of atmosphere samples a while ago - they're available here - but I don't know if anyone liked them or found a use for them.)

The post above mine mentions adding beeps. I'm taking that a step further.

You wanted to know what you could use them for.

Nice, oggs. I don't see those around enough. I made some very similar stuff myself using both synths and audio (I had some free time last summer). The time I spent actually ended up yielding on 30 minute and one 60 minute piece. I've played them for a few people but mostly they are just for sampling from for soundtracks and such. Cool stuff.
