For me personally, I think that Kjaerhus Gold, Sonalksis and Voxengo plugins are THE best VST plugins out there that do not require a DSP card. I have used Waves and honestly believe that these 3 brands destroy Waves in terms of stability, customer support, price and sound.

I would start with Kjaerhus Gold, these are fantastic bread and butter plugins and behave the way you'd expect.

For some spice during mixing, try Voxengo & Sonalksis.

For mastering, it's Kjaerhus Gold (Compression), Sonalksis (Compression and maybe EQ if you're feeling like an adventure) and Voxengo (linear phase / dynamic EQs, compressors, limiters) all the way.

If I truly had to choose among the ones you have mentioned as to the plugins I couldn't live without, I would say either, I could do the job with only Voxengo plugins or only Kjaerhus but it is a huge advantage to have both because they are very different.

Overall, this is how I see it...

Best EQ: Sonalksis, Voxengo GlissEQ
Best Compressor: GCO, GPP, Sonalksis, Marquis (all different, all top end)
Best Reverb: I like convolution, pristine space with L960 impulses does the trick for me
Best Chorus / Phasers / Modulation: Kjaerhus
Best Delay: I use Voxengo TempoDelay and Classic Delay, both awesome in their own way.
Analysers: Used to be Elemental Audio, now I think Voxengo is the best you can probly get and its free.

Best Mastering Plugins: Compressors listed above for single band compression, HarmoniEQ, GlissEQ, CurveEQ, Elephant. Soniformer too if you like a lot of control, I personally find Soniformer confusing and not required:D

For compression I use: GCO / BT CP2S / GPP / PSP MasterComp / Sonalksis SV-315 / Crunchessor


For EQ I use: GEQ / BT Equalizer PEQ2ABC / PSP MasterQ / Sonalksis SV-517.

I used to have more, but I sold some stuff that I don't use often .

I'm making music, and i like sonalksis a lot...specially the 517 eq, more than other waves or voxengo eq

In the Eq department I like Voxengo, URS and Tritone Digital. PSP Neon is said to be good too.

When it comes to comp, I prefer PSP (VintageWarmer always work). T-Racks sounds good too. For voices, maybe Waves. Crunchessor and Marquis still don't do the trick for me.
As a mastering multiband compressor and limiter, I use Voxengo Soniformer and Elephant.

While i own a little from all the developers the original poster named because all are great developers, And some does better in some categories or make plugs that others don't make (like wave arts with panorama, it is a great plug and others don't make this type so often it is necessary to shop around), but overall i own more Voxengo's then any brand and my current project seems to crave a voxengo plug on each mix.I found each developers to have a few great plugs but there are alot more of the voxengo collection that i feel to be great, and by themselves can almost form a well rounded arsenal.I like more voxengo's plugs then any other developers plugs, so their number of great plugins is greater to me.I find them to be more practical then most plugs because the characteristics of their sound don't dominate many of my mixes in ways i don't like so i get more frequent use out of them.My second choice is Uad-1 but other developers still may be best in certain categories (like ik multimedia with CSR).All the developers you named are great developers and where all fortunate to have them and their contributions.And in the end it's best to let the mix decide whats best and my mixes don't always agree with me.

I use both Voxengo and Kjaerhus Golden plugs when mastering (and even mixing). They work perfectly for me, the prices are reasonable, I'm supporting small developers AND the people I play my tunes for say it sounds good.

The only other place I'd go would be with a UAD-1 card, but I'm not convinced it'll make enough of a difference to justify the cost. I'll get a faster computer first.

I have most of the same plugs as soundpalace and agree with his comments 100%. Voxengo and Kjaerhus are great. I also like slimslowslider's c3 for day-in day-out dirt simple multiband, but it's nice to have the detailed control of Soniformer for odd problems.

Wavearts and Waves both require restrictive copy protection, so if they go out of business and you change computers, bye bye investment.
