I was was wondering if anyone knew if eXT ran on Linux and which distro it runs on? The reason I ask this is cause I just found out that my smartphone (treo 700p) runs ACCESS Linux.. wondering if any of this is a possiblity!??

i can get the current one going on wine, but no sound.
anybody ever tried installing ASIO drivers on wine / linux???
don't think it could possibly work, but hey...

it means that xt2 will work on a x86 linux distro .. and that means it won't run on a smartphone unless it has an x86 processor which i doubt it has.

ASIO is for Windows only.... and it will never change (Steinberg/Yamaha definitivly have no preferences in open source. It is not possible to install windows driver on linux.Z3R0T0N1N wrote:"it will run.."

You have to start the w32.dll of eXT in dssi-vst/wine for lowlatency audio. But before you have to make the JACK demon work. eXT graphics will be very slow and the sequencer is not working because of a lack of host sync in dssi-vst.
Another method:
With "winecfg" it is possible to give wine a jack client option - so i started succesfull some apps like "reaper" with a latency under 50ms and full vst support. But in reaper I used the mme driver (LOL) but eXT only supports ASIO (no way on Linux)so this method didn't work for eXT - standalone (But inside reaper
The Linux port of eXT2 should nativly support the jack system because this is the most advanced, stable and fast Audio System Input Output.

If you want a recommantion for a easy to use linux start - Start with www.jacklab.net or www.ubuntustudio.com . JackLab has the better kernel, ubuntustudio the better community.

I've been running a new Ubuntu dapper install lately, and have had some success with Ubuntustudio. I'd recommend ubuntu to anyone wanting to give linux a try, easiest intall of any os I've ever seen. Believe me, if I can do it, anybody can. I didn't know that there was an audio setup built upon suze though, that looks interesting.
I have to say, I've got this ubuntu install running in such a satisfactory way (using it for graphics and streaming net radio mainly) that I really don't want to go back to windows. I'm going to keep this setup for a while in order to learn as much as possible about this OS before XT2 comes out, then I'll have a serious look at building an audio setup to work specifically with XT2 alone. I had a planet ccrma Fedora based install for a while, and while a lot of the synths are really interesting, none of the sequencers really worked for me.
For the time being, I'm learning how to use this OS properly, there's quite a lot to get your head around, but i must admit, I've not had so much enjioyment from computing for ages, I'm absolutely loving it, evrerything just seems to work.
I can't wait for XT2 either, but the longer Jorgen takes to make it great, the better I'll know my intended os to run it on.

Thats the best you can do. Learn how to use Linux step by step and maybe work with a dual boot system. ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake is a good starter system (the first big distri with working jack out of the box) but to build it up for a real DAW it you need to make a lot improvements and have some deeper linux skills -> see also this thread http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=199803 - a realtime kernel means 2-3 times better lowlatency performance. Also the midi tick (real time clock) item must be fixed and the alsa sequencer have to load everytime on start on an optimized audiosystem.
I will build up a real audio lowlatency kernel with all fixes for ubuntu later and make a "public pre alpha very unstable testing" version available on the jacklab server.
Much easier to use for "poweruser" is SUSE 10.0 (not 10.1) with the jacklab extensions. SUSE also offers YAST, a graphical administration tool for nearly every aspect of configuration.

I thought Jorgen stated xt2 will only support ALSA/OSS (no jack).

I think, but I'm maybe wrong, that ALSA is supported by Jackit.....So if xt2 works with ALSA, it should work with Jack....

The audio api will be open source on ext2 I often heard, but I don't recognized any "call for jack support" nor any specification for the api of eXT2 in the well known places (Linux Audio Developer), so I think, the release of ext2 will be without jack support.

A release without working JACK support is defenitivly not what I want for a eXT2 on Linux. Alsa never can give the stable lowlatency enviroment for audio. It is like "mme" on windows systems. The OSS driver are still in the kernel, but only for compatibility. No distribution using this driver model anymore, it is obsolete.
If Jorgen want to sell copys of eXT2 on Linux, he *must* make the jackapi available - and he have to work it out. No free developer will work for this "killer feature" for nothing.
