i tried the demo of v7, and have to say it's great. finally i can click the X and it wont delete the generator! makes me happy, i know it's stupid but old habits..

Yes! I think this is the single most important improvement so far. Especially for large projects with lots of generators/effects.

what i love about orion is its workflow.i can see everything clearly.im debating whether to buy fl studio or orion.i like fruityloops for making beats and using the piano roll but i hate the pattern arranger.i wish you could see the midi files or see the patterns like in orion a1,a2.i get confused in fruityloops.also not having acidized loops in the pattern arranger and the automation i wish you could see it over the patterns like acid pro has.right now im probably leaning towards orion though i dont care for the drummachine,i also wish it had a way to use acidized loops.but otherwise it looks good.

For me, Orion is like a shiny box of toys. Fruity used to be like that for me, but Orion has now filled this spot.

i'd like to ask the existing orion users; what is it about orion that you feel makes it better than other pattern based hosts (flstudio/phrazor - reason excluded because it's all internal no external support for vst(i)/dx(i))

One word; Workflow.

Well more words.. it's just fast to work with it. Also the way patterns are visualized in playlist is much more intuitive than ie. in FLS. I really had to think hard to realize FLS actually is just more like old tracker what comes to sequencing in playlist, which is very cumbersome. Orion's playlist represents better ie. Buzz tracker's way. Each generator is it's own individual instance which you just layer in playlist. Sort of half way of linear and tracker patterns, best of both worlds.

Another good reason is that all the internal FX are very good, so I really don't need VST effects that much. Only few which I prefer or Orion doesn't have, but I really haven't checked any new fx for past two years.

I like the sequencer/piano roll most of all.. left click insert note, right click delete note and it has a nice snap/fill note feature.. automation at the bottom.. its just really easy for me to approach.

For me, Orion is like Impulse Tracker and FL Studio is like Fast Tracker.. IT was very inviting and easy to use, while I felt very claustrophobic using the FT2 interface.

My thoughts exactly. If you use Reason then think about how Redrum patterns are stored and painted. Apply a piano roll for editing and then attach it to all VSTi's. To me it is the easiest, quickest way to put together a song. I also wish it could have Acid file tracks but it is easy to rewire to Acid.

There's no product I regret selling more than Orion. I loved it over Tracktion 2, FLS, eXT... I just felt comfortable manuevering in the program. I love the mixer and the piano roll is great for a non-traditional sequencing environment. The only gripes I ever had (which haven't been addressed) are no global generator settings (use CC's always instead of VST params.) And I want to use it as a traditional sequencer instead of pattern based, so the preset pattern length is a PITA for me.

I tend to be able to compose quicker in Orion than any other app I own. Especially lately, I've finished more songs in OPlat than in Tracktion2 or energyXT! It took me some time early on in V6 to get used to it, but now I can sit down and *work* without having to think too much about how to accomplish something.

I'm with Joseph on the two annoyances, though. I'd love global generator settings and auto-expanding patterns when recording in song mode, but it's not enough to stop me from creating. I tend to mix pattern-based bed tracks with played-in lead and fx, so I'm only peeved 1/2 the time (lol).

Definitely lovin' on V7, spent most of last night playing around with it. Worth more than the upgrade price, to me.

Is emulator X working with it without midi sync problems?

Can i write my hardware synths without many many problems and latency?

thanks for your responses. i feel you on the impulse tracker and fasttracker comparison, and it's an apt analogy imo. a keen mind you've there vitamind

for joseph; i dont know if this matters but when recording audio and arming a track in the playlist, it works just like a linear sequencer... the only thing missing in this realm is loop recording working with takes, instead of just appending and appending to make one long track (not very helpful) -- but it's not meant to be used that way. you can use any host that's good at that and then import the render, i think that's what it's intended for.

and i agree that fl's way of pattern playlist is a little more confusing.

one thing that i didn't like about orion was only 2 inserts per generator track? am i missing something or? i know there are lots of sends and such so i guess if i'm fair about it, the most i'd ever use per track/generator would be compression, delay, and maybe a gate or some distortion or bitcrunching or something, the reverb and chorus would be fine on a send i suppose. it just seems like a drastic limit. i poked around looking for a way to add a new effect slot to a generator with no luck.

the sampler is excellent! loved the zone mapper!

how do you edit automation? i was able to record and then wiggle controls and it recorded them, but where does this information go? can i get at it?

Use multifx container for adding more inserts. Recorded events go to song events and pattern events.

i already have ext, phrazor, flstudio, tracktion, cubase sx2(abandoned), sonar 2XL(abandoned), and just got music creator 2003 bundled with my hyper canvas.

*shudders* phrazor is awesome for reasons that are different than ext, and tracktion rules for audio, and flstudio rocks for other reasons too. (i'm trying to justify how i could use orion) ... i have a feeling i'd wind up using orion more than flstudio and i dont want to abandon that...

anyone own both orion and fls? if so, what do you use most for what purpose?

orion is definitely very sweet workflow you guys are right.

is it possible to rename patterns from A1, A2, etc? also is it possible to create marker points in the timeline?
