I own both. I used to use FL all the time, but to be honest, since version 4 I have veered away from it in favour of quicker and better workflow. I still use Tracktion for most tasks, but Orion for me, is better than FL because it is more fun to use, seems cleaner and quicker and is just much less fiddly and fussy.

Yes. And BandFX Container where you can create your own 3 band compressor or something else..
is it possible to rename patterns from A1, A2, etc? also is it possible to create marker points in the timeline?
Rename patterns yes, markers not yet atleast.

Hurrah.
Amazing. You should be on the beta testing team... working out those bugs for the greater good. :P I have only had a handful of times where Orion 5-6 has crashed.. most due to using a midi keyboard while playing back audio..

so that said.. I suspect you were using a midi keyboard at the time!

Is emulator X working with it without midi sync problems?

Can i write my hardware synths without many many problems and latency?
Don't know what probs you have had then, but I have nine hardware synths and I have no bigger problems. The new input monitoring changes fix some problems with the monitoring latency and real-time mixing of hw synths.

I started out on Orion. This app will always hold a special place for me because it was my introduction to music making and made it a fun, pain-free process. In fact I upgraded to 7 as a show of support for Synapse. I mostly use FLS now because I've found its workflow to be more suitable for the way I like to work and arrange, and the Elastique timestretching is amazing for remixing . But both apps are very powerful and a blast to use.

how do you rename a pattern? i've looked all over the place.

and yes +1 FR for the linear recording without having to specify preset lengths in steps for patterns. now i understand what he meant. it's odd that when arming a track in the playlist and hitting record for audio does work in this way, but not for patterns. i guess i know why because the scope is wrong for midi data how would it know which pattern.. i guess a selector right in the track? i dunno. it's kind of a bummer though.

i just made a simple 2 pattern drum deal with drumatic, each 32 steps, structure: a1 a1 a2 a1 a1 a1 a2 a1 -- simple (a2 is variation/fill) .. so then i was like ok that's cool, let me throw a bass line on it. so i loaded toxic2, chose the first bass sounding preset (fruitybass - should be called pr0nbass), then armed the playlist track thinking that it would let me linearly record over the entire length of the song instead it recorded only the length of the pattern (16 steps or 4 bars), then started repeatedly inserted this 4 bar pattern as the playlist moved on...

obviously the workaround seesm to be setting the pattern length excessively long before recording, to make it act linearly, but it's kind of a bummer and a shortcircuit for creativity to have to do this for every linear track. couldn't there be an option you click to make it ignore the length of the pattern and let you record, then when done set the length to your recorded length on it's own? i'm sure this is what was meant by joseph...

it's the opposite for me. i started with fl :) but it's cool of you to keep upgrading even if you don't use it. the devs gotta eat somehow!

That's true :) And it just so happens that Rich Hoffman is one of the nicest people I've ever dealt with.

Help file is updated regarding those, but you can use N key on playlist (take mouse over the pattern) or in the generator/pianoroll. Also try clicking on the pattern name in the playlist and right clicking in the pattern/bank buttons in the synth toolbar.
over the entire length of the song instead it recorded only the length of the pattern (16 steps or 4 bars), then started repeatedly inserted this 4 bar pattern as the playlist moved on...
I suppose you had the playlist track R armed? It's ment to be pattern sequence recording. Ie. you can switch the active pattern as song goes and the new pattern will be inserted to the song as previous pattern ends. Nothing to do with midi recording.

ahhh. that explains it. sort of like a build the song with midi insertion of patterns like ableton and fl playlist with live mode on? ... i didn't look at the help file for pattern name because everything in this program is usually so intuitive .. thanks mark.
