sfz from www.rgcaudio.com is free and standalone too, but plays only wav-files and soundfonts. (Only the first beta-versions of sfz+, not free, play giga-files too
)
Another one is MINIHOST by Tobybear (the one who made Helios, mentioned above). This is a donation-ware-host that of course can host ANY sample-player, so you could load Helios or any other into it and would have your standalone-player... It's a very nice program, and Tobybear a great developer.

I also think sfz is what you want. It is simple, it is resource friendly. It plays wav, ogg, soundfont, and also own format, .sfz
It has several modes including disk streaming. All for free.
And, the sound quality is as good or better than anything else.

Yeah I don't see free either, so I gotta sat FL Studio aka Fruity Loops. Producer edition is 150 bucks with lifetime updates. It has a few very resourcefull ways to play samples (sampler and slicer, plus audio clips). I've yet to see anything as resourcefull for sampling on a computer (not to mention is supports both vst and dx plugins). Also the demo isn't very resricted at all, so it's at least worth trying if you haven't tried it yet or recently.
Always remember that others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.
