i was trying to use it as a pitch shifter (to get that mad sounding deep tone without drop d tuning) and it worked but it didn't at the same timeCapnLockheed wrote:Now there's an understatement....As a guitar effect I'vethe ring modulator can create some very dissonant sounds. had little use for ringmods. They can be pretty cool on
keyboard stabs or single drum hits tho.

to be honest, it is a little of both. it sounds different because i edit deeper because i like to edit on it and know how it works (atleast the amp and pedals if not guitsyn yet). i think i've achieved a great sound that i could not achieve from the old version and i cannot pinpoint why or how. i guess when it's released, you guys will do your own a-b'ing but so far as i can tell it sounds like he did a bit of polishing on the rewrite. the UI forced him to reconnect alot of things and i'm sure that he fixed things that bugged him or something in the process. he's a madman, recreated all his presets almost already! he must have pulled some all-night sessionsguitarzan wrote:grymmjack, now that you've had a while to check out FreeAmpSE 2 does it really sound different from 1.5, or is it just easier to edit? I just hope my favorite 1.5 Fender tone that I've been tweaking for days now can be easily recreated on 2.0. I guess better would be OK, too, though!grymmjack wrote:the sounds are just amazing. i could never get this out of the old amp, might have been because of the control system or something, but jesus this is crazy good.
i think everyone will be quite happy with freeamp 2.x and i think that in the right hands it sounds better than the commercial first generation stuff out there. the best part i think about this project is it's spirit -- the spirit of freewill and solidarity amongst musicians, which i think in it's latest version is really going to become even more of a mainstay in the community for a long time to come as we all share our thoughts and comments and patch designs creating a sort of free-version of what rivals the commercial tone collections.
it's got a big heart, and can make big sounds.
asseca; what do you think man? how have your tests gone?

hrm. i haven't had that problem with the chorus in 2.x, and i've tested it pretty good. however, that does not mean that some combination of effects in the chain weren't to blame. i'd say i've had more luck/better success with this latest version than any.psychopractor wrote:in regard to the chorus, this wasn't while adjusting controls. The patch I first noticed this on was 'Chiffy 2'(?) I think. I tried adding chorus for a JC120 vibe and during the chorus' sweep I heard faint popping noises. This is in 1.5
the cpu is hugely improved. i'm amazed by how much tbh. i think this might prove to the SE haters that SE should be taken more seriously. of course not everyone is as keen to dsp and SE as joe, he's got years of experience, but in the right hands ...
load time is almost the same too, maybe 1 second more now, which is also quite a testament to the graphics handler or whatever of SE because this has tons of custom control graphics with many frames and such. it's not quite as fast as loading AT1, but it's only 1 or 2 seconds slower, so a rack of freeamps (i've been able to insert and use 4 at one time if i'm conservative - i think the most i'd ever need is 3 though -- bass, rhythm, lead) should take maybe 10-15 seconds to load. not bad at all.
your just going to have to test it on your own when it's released, which he has promised would be very soon. i can vouch for it's 'readiness' .. i'd be willing to make some videos of the controls in action if you are jonesing for something to look at and are bored or something, or if you prefer to be surprised, like i was -- it was christmas time no kidding! -- i could skip it.
i am dying to hear what asseca has to say.

guitarzan wrote:I don't have anywhere to post it, but I could send the fxp by e-mail if you want to PM the address. It's no big deal, really - just tweaks on the Chimp preset - but I use FreeAmp with a bunch of other plugs and I have them all tweaked for this Fender patch because it is my favorite type of guitar tone.cheul wrote:Would you mind posting that Fender preset ?guitarzan wrote:I just hope my favorite 1.5 Fender tone that I've been tweaking for days now can be easily recreated on 2.0.
I tried the preset alone (without all the other plugs I use with it) and it sounds pretty good, I guess. I added a little reverb so it would sound better on it's own.
hopefully your dependency on the external effects becomes less. as with anything though it's all about preference and what you like.

That screenshot is kind of the experimental layout - the Kjaerhus stuff is all set very light and is there to represent "mastering fx" (I am using the FreeAmp pedals for regular guitar FX), I will probably group all of those in a seperate energyXT vst. After that, the hdphx plug and the W1 limiter will probably be another eXT vst called "headphone monitoring" or something because that is really what those are there for (I really do like the W1, though, and will probably use in mastering, too). The TLs SaturatedDriver is being used mostly to taylor the attack, but it also does nice things to the midrange, more harmonics - like a good clean boost does to a hardware amp, but without the actual boost. Maybe I can handle that with careful tweaking of the Pre Compressor in FreeAmp, which isn't engaged in my "Fender" preset. I find the compressors kind of hard to tweak in 1.5, though.grymmjack wrote:kjaerhaus classics rule, but dare i say it -- you may find the pedals to be sufficient in mix context. there is no way they can compete with kjaerhaus' or other external effects, but man, they sound pretty good. i'm not a huge fan of the chorus yet, it seems too subtle and this could be a user error, when added along with OD and some reverb. however, the other effects so far have been good. i'm thinking that the simulanalog stuff may be a good compliment and will do some testing when i have more time.

yea i feel you. in 2.x they are dead simple and you can adjust the meters to show what you need to see .. reduction etc.

Great news, there!! Well adjusted compressors can do a lot of the magic tube amp feel stuff, at least that's how it seems to me. Close enough for rock and roll, and that's all that matters!grymmjack wrote:yea i feel you. in 2.x they are dead simple and you can adjust the meters to show what you need to see .. reduction etc.

Some first impressions of FreeAmp2:
For a beta it is remarkably stable, not a single crash so far...
CPU usage is clearly lower than in v1.5, my estimate is about 30% lower ...
v2 takes about 1 second longer to open, which is understandable, more modules needs to be activated, including the Guitsyn stuff.
When switching between presets there is quite some audible glitch-noises, however these were also audible in v1.5 ...
For some reason the tone seems to have improved greatly compared to v1.5 ...
I would say the overall tone can be very well (easier) adjusted to sound snappier and have more punch then in v1.5
A great part of the sound improvement can be attributed to grymmjack's improved graphics layout, giving a much better oversight on what is going on in each pedal(stomp box).
The Phaser and Flanger are welcome pedal/stomp additions ...
The sync section: Manual/Host/Tap works excellent.
When set to "Tap", and then click on the "TAP TEMPO" at a constant rate will result in the correct BPM...
There will be a WIKI section on-line for you guys to submit your presets(FXP) and banks(FXB) ...
