So are you saying that by saying 'nope there's no one single answer' I somehow disrupted this process, and .jon's erstwhile-unposted benevolence was thus transcended into his conscious effort to undermine my credibility on the basis of that statement?
An obvious attempt at amiable discourse is a "conscious effort to undermine [your] credibility on the basis of that statement?" ?

Really? Didn't catch that Sean -- mainly because I wasn't 'looking' for or didn't 'see' any untoward efforts, conscious or otherwise, to "undermine" your credibilty. We do tend to see what we want to though eh?

I only saw polite attempt to explain a point that you have whittled into an almost neurotic form of pedantism.

That the question implies answers and opinions that are ultimately subjective is obvious, so we move on from there and attempt to refine the original communication -- perhaps because it lacks clarity. We may point this out to the author in an instructive way, with the emphasis on 'instructive' and 'helpful', but we do so to help further the explanation he desires, as ineloquently as he might have first stated it.

The sum of your point is that the question is pointless because the ultimate answer is always subjective. This may be true in a purely semantic sense, but it's rather unfriendly and non-productive to belabouringly (and tiresomely) engineer the conversation so that it results in the author feeling stupid and belittled. Not all of us are as analytically cunning as you -- nor do we feel the need to be so. ;)

Try this: "Well, the answer to your question is, of course, quite obviously in fact, a very subjective one. However, you might try (this and that one) and see if they make you happy. Here are some links."

All up, it is NOT entirely subjective, there are many factors one may consider in choosing an EQ beside it's ability to EQ something. This is implied in the 'context' of the language as we award benefit of the doubt that the author isn't entirely brain-dead. We go from there.

Of course, if you want to pick on the poor bugger's choice of words, that's your prerogative eh?

:hihi:
Hmmm, I dont see why. Surely a debate on whats potentially good or useful isnt that easily derailed?

S'funny cos I havent noticed anyone even trying to garner information on the OP's kit, for example, which I would have thought was a logical first step for establishing that same rapport by determining what might be useful to him, given that his CPU, say, might be older and underpowered and incapable of running some of the things people are blithely recommending to him as a 'track EQ'. Which would have been the useful relevance of .jon's obsession with CPU usage, IMO, not just some sort of odd context-free counterargument to my own thoughts...
Then why weren't you the first to ask him thusly? ;)

Cheers,
Your Friendly Alex

whyterabbyt wrote: No, I just dont understand your point, full stop. Im asking you quite clearly to explain what the CPU usage of a track EQ has to do with saying that the choice of 'best track EQ' is subjective.
It is obvious that you don't understand. And to answer your question- nothing. I wasn't attacking your statement, just stating that CPU usage is not subjective for a track eq. You don't agree, fine.
And? Someone asked about 'best track EQ'; I responded "there is no single 'best' track EQ"
No, you responded:
No. Its all subjective.
And that is just your point of view, which you seem to consider to be some sort of objective thruth.
If a given EQ cant be used as a track EQ, that has no bearing whatsoever on my response. If a given track EQ uses less CPU than a different track EQ, there is still no indication of a universal 'best'.
You do understand that also your point of view that "CPU consumption is subjective" is also subjective.
I somehow disrupted this process, and .jon's erstwhile-unposted benevolence was thus transcended into his conscious effort to undermine my credibility on the basis of that statement?
Ah, I see. Sorry whyterabbyt, I have no intentions to undermine your credibility. If you feel that way when I just state a different opinion, you may have a problem.
If you decided absolutely you wanted to use a specific EQ that required 65% CPU usage then you'd do so in offline processing. Its still subjective.
This looked to me as though you missed the point that he was asking for a track eq. I disagree with your statement that all is subjective when determining the best track eq, and I have tried to justify my opinion, but believe me, your credibility was not questioned at any point.

Everything in this world is subjective, you can deny the whole ball if you wish so, but sometimes a compressor is not a bicycle, and for some people this is most of the time. Everybody is free to use a bicycle as a track eq, but many of us would prefer a low CPU plugin for that purpose. I think it's absolutely necessary.

I also think that taking everything as literally as possible is not always worth the trouble. Life is not so serious, and "what's the best" KVR threads neither.

Oh nevermind, xander already stated my points in a rather more literate way.

rabbyt; are you a lawyer? if not, you should be, you'd make a pretty good politician too i think. if you are offended by this, i apologize, i'm not trying to offend you. simply stating that you are very meticulous and well spoken.

the track eq i like best is the one built into my host. in this case mackie tracktion eq which is a 4band parameteric and out of reach of the poster unless he also uses tracktion.

outside of tracktion i find the karma fx eq to be very good.

I dont see any attempt at 'amiable discourse' there at all.
Really? Didn't catch that Sean -- mainly because I wasn't 'looking' for or didn't 'see' any untoward efforts, conscious or otherwise, to "undermine" your credibilty. We do tend to see what we want to though eh?
And ignore what we want.

I still dont see any clear point made, let alone an explanation of it that actually sits within the context of what .jon was purportedly refuting. Can you provide a direct link, say, or is this just some sort of game where me trying to ask for an explanation of what he actually meant in the context of what I said is passed off as me being pedantic.
Is it that hard to give an actual answer to my question, then?

Try this: "Well, the answer to your question is, of course, quite obviously in fact, a very subjective one. However, you might try (this and that one) and see if they make you happy. Here are some links."
Given that the OP had by that time started about ten different 'whats the best' threads, as well as a couple of 'buy my CD' threads, I think I'd rather have said what I did, and see if the OP makes any conscious effort to clarify the information being sought. Its not as if forum trolls havent done this kind of thing before, so I reckon something short and succinct will do for now, thanks.

wavearts trackplug is my vote.

its much easier to just stay out of a thread you don't want to contribute to... makes sense to me

OP -- Are you a troll? If not...

Depending how seriously in need you are, I can vouch for Waves Audio Track, which is more than just a track EQ, it's a combination EQ/Compressor/Limiter. It's $150.00 but worth it in my opinion. It's very efficient (easy on CPU) and I have also used it as a mastering tool on a few songs where multi-band delineation was not as important. ;)

I'm going to recommend the new Eliosound AirEQ. The sound quality and incredible CPU usage are just mind-boggling. If you've got Cubase or a Syncrosoft dongle, I would say you have to try this. Obviously, being dongled and not cheap, it's not for everyone.

Just FYI: I wound up hitting it off with the developer and I'm working with them on their copy, so I am connected to them now. But I'm honestly recommending this because I was so blown away by the performance and sound of this thing. I had to load up my biggest comp and load this on tens of tracks to even start to see any real CPU usage; they've really optimized the code on this sucker, all with sweet, colourful sound! Check it out.

The best VST EQ's are in the following order or my subjectivity:

1. Hydratone/UAD Pultec Pro/UAD Neve 1073
2. URS A+N Mix
3. Sony Oxford Powercore
4. PLParEQ
5. Sonalksis
6. Equim/Voxengo/Kjaerhus

Paying for the Hydratone/Colortone combo + getting the free PLPar3 EQ should pretty much cover all your bases at a very low cost. URS, Sony and PLPar10 have idiotic pricing and while Sonalksis is pretty good it's also a bit expensive...

you use vst right?

I have a number of EQs that I like, but Voxengo's GlissEQ is the most useful to me.

Unfortunately, PLParEQ3 is no longer free, it's $150, but compared to $1000 for the 10 band that's a good deal, IMO.

You might try this one on for size:

It's cheap and I like it a lot for certain apps, like general bass cutting and boosting the mids for synthesizers.
