Sidechain controllable Filter - does one exist?

Hello,

sometimes it would be very handy to have a sidechain controllable filter (real sidechaining) but I never heard of one. :help:

Is such a filter somewhere out there in the VST world or has it still to be built?

Post

What do you want to do with it? i.e. what should control what?

For example - Amplitude of one track controls cut-off frequency of another?

What do you have in mind?

TC Powercore Filtrator is the only one I know of, but it's got a rather expensive dongle.. :hyper:

You could use the Bluecat peak tool thingy... it's in the quicklist on the right. You can use the pro version to send out to a CC number if I remember correctly. Then you can assign that to a control on any vst.

Sounds like a good idea, sidechainable filter envelope follower.

Just an idea, http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-auto-filter.php

One could possibly kindly ask Torben if he would be interested in giving the classic filter a sidechain. It might not be such a terribly frustrating thing to code and add to the existing plug.

I wouldn't bother if only two people really need it.

In FL Studio with its peak controller plugin, you can control virtually anything (eg. song tempo :) ) with output level of any mixer channel. So I don't need dedicated side chained filter.

That is an excellent suggestion for anyone wanting a sidechained filter for free. I've used the Bluecat thingummy on all sorts of automation in the past. Simply get your read-out of the output, and paste it onto an automation channel. It can get a bit fiddly, but you can do all manner of weird things with it.

Another suggestion is QuantumFX2 from DB Audio. It comes with a sidechain filter as one of its presets already. The demo is fully functional...give it a whirl. One of the big benefits of QFX2 is the modular nature...it's not a long stretch from the preset sidechain filter into a whole filterbank on a sidechain, as the basic connections are already there.

(Someone mentioned Filtrator...that was an excellent filter - I almost bought the TC Native pack solely on the strength of the filter...wish I had now... :? )

I would just use Soma's audio->CC envelope follower, and set it to send the CC of whatever filter cutoff you need.

Works fine in EnergyXT here. The 2nd stereo input is the sidechain. You can both apply the sidechains envelope to the signals volume and to its filter cutoff.

This is just a quick alteration of this:

@Space Boy
Yes, controlling the cutoff freq. of one track by the amplitude of another track.

@stefancrs
I had no success with your plugin in Cubase SX.
Maybe I have done something wrong :?:

@all
Thanks for the replies! :)
I will check the suggested tools, if they are free or if there are demo versions..

Perhaps useless info, but AudioMulch has a nice one (called SouthPole).

Route the audio you want filtered into the first stereo pair and the sidechain to the second stereo pair. You might have to do this by using the plug on a quad buss or whatever it's called in Cubase and then send the two channels to that buss, maybe by using a surround panner. I don't remember exactly how you had to go about to do sidechain stuff in Cubase.

I did exactly that in my most recent track :) Had a channel's level control the frequency of a formant filter in BiFilter. Fun stuff.

This is interesting, Stefan, but a couple things that could be better:

- I would exclude the amplitude gating entirely and just have the filter modulation
- There needs to be a gain function on the envelope depth. Maybe it's just me, but I would expect with cutoff at zero and track at maximum that the envelope would modulate up to the max. cutoff value if the sidechain input peak volume warrants it.
- Also an optional low pass filter on the sidechain input would be nice, to help make the envelope's contour smooth.
