Jack frustrations (now sorted)

fyi, I can run xt2 on latest ubuntu with 128 frames buffer size, 64K buffered disk streaming with real-time time-stretching playback of wav's and (my little linux sine) VST without any audio dropouts (runing audio playback in high priority thread).

This is with OSS and ALSA on a "vanilla" 2.6 kernel and my SBLive card.

nope, he didn't - he already stated this in another thread...

At the moment, i use a lot REaper. It is free while still beta, and as a working timestretching that suit my needs.

I suspect eXT will be using the same type.

...which would be the soundstretch algorithm (i think i can remember, that jorgen was talking about investigating this library, as it is open source )

There is no question about that Jack as great app, and it works like hell. Why you can't get it to work I don't know, but I have had none or smaller issues before getting it to work. Maybe you should sit down and learn how jack works, study your interface. This will get you some insight.

I had it running in the planet ccrma setup, so I know it does work, maybe it's just an ubuntu thing. I installed ubuntu because I simply wanted to learn everything myself, a friend helped me install PlanetCCRMA and Fedora 3 and while good, i couldnt install the latest graphics apps because of dependency problems. I didn't particularly get along with any of the audio apps, so I installed ubuntu myself, and found the whole process refreshingly easy.

I'll do some more internettery and try to find out if there are ubuntu/Jack/Terratec issues.

I think Terratec is well suported under Jack, but there could be a number of things that crashes. I'm not gonna guess what that is.

I wasn't trying to be rude when I said read up on Jack and your card, but sometimes just the simplest little thing can make things go bad. Knowing your tools can give you a heads up. If you're a gui guy install qjackctl and use the config menu to tweak whatever you want. That is maybe the best advice I can give you.

Read up on Linux, and pick one distro and stay with it is another good tip. I've learned alot the last few years just on using my own distro.

When you know your distro good enough you can do the steps nessesary to tweak it for Audio/Media in general.

IRC is a huge knowledge base, use the guys at #ardour a they are Jack experts. They can maybe help you out with your card. There are alot of usergroups on the net too. I don't think KVR is the place to go for this kinda info, since KVR are mainly Mac/Win users..

Wow that sounds great -a very clean development, Jorgen


But there is another audiosequencer for Linux named "protux" -with same alsa/oss values like yours. The developer (a good one) of protux has decided not to support JACK, cause he don't like the concept. protux is dead now.

Another reason for eXT2 with jack is the lack of "native linux vst plugins" because there are no "native linux vst plugins" because the steinberg vst-sdk has no linux thrunk and will NEVER have one. So an alsa eXT2 will be an isolated application. Only the plugins Jorgen offers will work.

JACK can easily connect to other applications, like software synths. The best way to understand it is to realize that jack offers a "rewire" for every jack app (here is a list http://jackaudio.org/applications )

Jorgen, it seems like you might just have found a way to "please all of the people", have you ever considered having a crack at nuclear physics? I've heard there's a little thing called cold fusion that could use some work.
