This has been put up for long. I dont know how many people haven't gone through this, but incase you missed it, here it is again. An astounding collection of samples to create your own instruments for almost an entire orchestra.

You can find soundfonts that people have made of these at sf2midi.com

Lots of samples there, some good, some not so good.

Over at sf2midi we have been working on these for some time. Unforunately some of the recordings are very amateur players, so the samples are almost useless. Wheezing attacks, can't stay on pitch while holding note, etc. Some are pretty good.

Don't reinvent the wheel, try the ones we already put together, at least to see if the sound is even close to what you want.

Just about all the U of Iowa samples have been assembled into soundfonts, truncated properly, tuned, looped when necessary, normalized, denoised, etc. so as to make them usable when possible.

Having compiled the flute, trumpet, cello, and clarinet, I can affirm this. I gave up on the strings after a significant amount of, err, fiddling with them; and deleted the entire sax library almost immediately.

But a lot of the library is quite good. You just have to wade through a lot of crap to get to it.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

could someone make oen big orchestral SF2?? easier to dl than 10 others :D

Yeah, the amount of time you'd spend getting these to sound half-decent you'd be way better off getting something like EWQL Symphonic Orchestra SILVER EDITION, Garritan Personal or Kirk Hunter Symphony. There simply are no good, free soundfont strings out there.

This could have something to do with the fact that hiring a professional (union scale) orchestra and an acousticly suitable hall is expensive. As are the microphones and recording gear necessary. Then while the $$$ clock is running you must capture all the recordings of every note and articulation that you will need - better hire a classical engineer while you're at it, since the session is already costing thousands of dollars an hour, and you want to nail it the first time.

Oh heck we might as well schedule a few weeks of sessions, no need to have the brass sit around while the violas play scales for a few hours, etc.

Then you must spend weeks in front of the wave editor cropping, tuning and naming all the samples, possibly looping anything that should sustain indefinitely, and assembling the velocity layers and keymaps in the sampler format of your choice.

Perhaps then you would not wish to give away the results for free?

The more time I spend creating soundfonts from instrument samples the more I appreciate being able to buy a good sample library for $$.

If you want a good orchestra in soundfont format there is the Sonic Implants one. It is worth the $500 if this is what you need.
