I'm thinking about trying out Cubase SE3 based on constant problems (hardware/software) with Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio XL.

Is the Cubase stuff less buggy? I can't even get the latest Home Studio XL to install even with the help of Cakewalk support!!!

New XP install has Cakewalk installing and running just fine! Keep it clean!

I'm running Cubase SX 3.1 and i find it VERY stable.

The only problems i got was because of unstable plugins.
But everything allways depends...Hardware, windows installation, ehh...user! and so on...

I am running Cubase SL 3.11, there are a few bugs I've noticed...

- Mixer doesn't remember position when opened
- Stereo Rewire pairs buggy
- Switching latency or turning on / off direct monitoring causes CPU spiking with GUI activity
- Sample rate changes don't work properly most the time

But truthfully that's actually it. Cubase is extremely stable and very smooth in workflow. I've tried Sonar so so many times and must say that many of the limitations and the GUI awkwardness of Sonar far outweigh the little bugs in Cubase.

There are a few bonuses in Sonar which you will miss (group track limitations in Cubase, no reordable inserts), but it's worth giving up when you see the difference in workflow.

Good luck with your decision ... you will probably get a lot of people bagging Cubase really soon, not really sure why people on KvR hate Cubase. The dongle maybe ? ... Not a single issue here with the dongle, I forget it's there.

twangchief, it might be worthwhile to check out the Steinberg forums and see what people are complaining about there. Every program has good points and problems. If you can match your needs with a certain software product's strengths, you'll hit that sweet spot. For me, Sonar does the job. For you it might be Steiny. Whatever you end up with, good luck!

Then again, you could always just learn to use Sonar.

Sonar 5.2 is not buggy at all in my experience. It is stable no matter what I try to do to mess it up.

I don't hate Cubase...

I use SL 3.11 and it works fine. Still, all of the mainstream hosts should work fine so there maybe a problem with your computer setup such as: buggy audio card drivers, fragmented hard drive, other applications running simultaneously and even stuff like expecting too much: try a higher audio latency and see if the problems perservere. You may even find that a reinstall of the software fixes it.

Could you elaborate on your problems with Home Studio XL?

I owned Home Studio for quite a while and never had any problems that I would've considered showstoppers of any sort. I certainly wouldn't have upgraded to Sonar SE if I'd had any qualms about the stability of Cakewalk apps.

The real concern is that, if the problem is a hardware one, you will have bought Cubase only to find the same problems there as well.

Cakewalk sent me both SONAR 4 and 5 NFR copies so I could test out Wusikstation on it. And I must say, its far more stable compared to any other host I ever tested. I did all my Dark-Ages series on SONAR 4, and lately, remastered with SONAR 5 and a bunch of plugins. The projects were really big, messy and full with stuff. No crashes.

They are both stable programs, IMO. Every now and then I have a VST plug that won't work in Sonar, so I pull out my old copy of the DirectiXer and use that for the stubborn plug.

I found Sonar 5.2 to be very stable. Anything serious I want to do gets done in Sonar.

Not the hosts are a problem, the combination host and some plugs is: that's my experience with sonar 2.2, cubase SE, live 4 lite ,fl-studio-demo and cmuzys. Recently I got tracktion: no problems yet.

Actually there is one thing I have not figured out with Sonar - and that's 'after touch' - at the moment anything where I want after touch I use the stand alone Energy XT then bring it into Sonar as I have not yet got after touch to work in Sonar 5.2 PE - anyone else?
